    Alberta Separatism

    Alberta separatism is a movement that advocates the secession of the province of Alberta from Canada either by forming an independent nation, or by creating a new federation with one or more of Canada's other three westernmost provinces.

    Foundations

    Alberta separatism arises from the belief held by some that Alberta is culturally distinct from the rest of Canada, particularly Central Canada and Eastern Canada, and from the belief that Alberta is harmed economically by providing financial support to other provinces through the federal transfer payment program. The Alberta economy has been traditionally based on ranching, and in the last half of the 20th century, been bolstered by considerable revenues from oil and gas production. Alberta has developed a political culture that is more conservative, in both economic and social issues, than the rest of Canada.

    Alberta separatism takes many different forms:

    * some advocate Alberta seceding from Canada to establish its own country;
    * more common is the idea that Western Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, possibly Manitoba) should separate to form one country, possibly including Canada's northern territories; see Western Separatism
    * one is that Alberta should separate only with British Columbia;

    What do you think? A load of BS or a legitimate wish to separate?

    Legitimate. Alberta and the other western provinces of Canada are used as resources for Ontario, so I do not see why they should put up with that. Once the money is gone, they will be treated as garbage like they have done here (used up all the fish, stopped caring suddenly). They also support independance of other Canadian provinces (and I see their leaders fully open to help organise any parties for it, including funds), so it is mutual support to me.

    A very small minority think this way. Western Block party receives virtually no support and has one of the crappiest logos ever.

    I think that is apparent to anyone. But at least there are still people in Canada who are not suicidal Liberals.

    I'm a supporter of successionist movements, so of course I would say this but...just because an idea has minimal support, doesn't mean it has no merit.

    Yeah, but we're talking about Alberta. With Quebec I can understand and sympathize to a certain extent because it's a matter of preserving language and culture--they have a distinct ethnic identity. This is not really the case with Alberta.
