    Post Re: Walmart as a case-study in globalization

    There is a joke here by a TV comedian last night. It went: Wal-Mart was forced to close a store in Ontario last week. Now, the former employees will have to cross two borders to return home.

    The fact is Wal-Mart hires illegal aliens and children, violating labor laws. It gets its merchandise from China and offers it a below market prices. Wal-mart employees have no benifits, no health insurance for instance. When they get sick we have to pay for it in public health assistance. This whole marketing scheme is called "the race to the bottom" in which lower prices lead to lower wages in a downward spiral. Meanwhile, fat-cats somewhere get rich.

    I am really sorry this company has invaded Europe. Maybe METRO has a different business plan. What McDonalds will do to your body, Wal-Mart will do to your economy.

    I only know about METRO in Bulgaria from what I read in the newspapers. Thousands of Serbs also go to METRO to buy things ( even with the trip and border crossing, and the +20% tax, METRO is significantly cheaper than anything here ).

    Anyway, from what I read, METRO caused a lot of stores in Bulgaria to close, and has done a similar thing like Walmart with the jobs. I suppose it's because of the lack of laws in the Balkans.
    These stories are greatly exaggerated, no such thing has happened.

    I worked for Walmart and it was nothing but drama. They instituted a micro-aggression policy to stifle freedom of speech and it totally ruined the atmosphere, after the pay raise everyone got. I was fired for politically incorrect jokes about homos and Muslims.

    Wal * Mart withdrew from Germany in year 2006,
    according to Wikipedia.

    Walmart had not been available in my area of Germany.
    I have never witnessed anything Walmart personally.

    German wikipedia says, that Germany in opposite to the USA
    had been a Cheap-Nourishing country since decades,
    which I personally can confirm.

    Deutschland ist, anders als die USA, seit Jahrzehnten ein Lebensmittel-Billigland;
    im Discountbereich ergeben sich Margen von nur ungefähr zwei Prozent (vgl. USA circa 5 %).
    Der ausbleibende Erfolg zwang Walmart schließlich dazu, das Geschäft in Deutschland aufzugeben.
    https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walmart

    On that Wikipedia page it says, that 44% of the employees of Walton's Market are
    replaced each year, making Walmart a huge "meat grinder" ;
    and the legal department has roughly 1'500 complaints in regards to worker's rights
    to cope with at any time.
    Im Schnitt muss der Konzern 44 % seiner Arbeitskräfte jährlich ersetzen,
    das bedeutet für ihn jedes Jahr 600.000 Neueinstellungen.
    Im Schnitt laufen zu jedem gegebenen Zeitpunkt etwa 1.500 Klagen gegen Walmart,
    die sich hauptsächlich gegen Verletzungen des amerikanischen Arbeitsrechts wenden.
    Walmart is with huge distance the largest employer on this earth
    with two million "associates" .
    It is claimed, that employees capable of serving long-time ,
    could become millionaires, due to participation bonuses.

    Drive by a Walmart every day, no reason for me to ever shop there.
