It is a good thing, for sure. It wasn't always this way--as when he was a young teen, I was obviously a bit younger and we shared a room, beat the crap out of each other (usually him kickming my rear due largely to size differential) and generally being a nuisance to each other. Although, even as I write this, I see that is was largely just typical, superficial, sibling interactions. For the big issues--like not telling on each other to our folks for sneaking out at night, swiping beers from the fridge, etc.--we had an unwritten rule that we'd always cover for each other. LOL...

Well, I can only imagine though, the father-son relationship from the father's perspective as I haven't reached that milestone yet and haven't learned the wisdom therein. In this case, I will have to defer to you--you of the fatherly sort.

I imagine taking my hypothetical kids fishing.....

I have it both ways, I'm an only child of my father and have a younger brother and sister from my mother. I'm not close to either, I left to live with my father when they were young enough to not really know them well. My sister is okay but she lives far away. My brother on the other hand is an abnoxious jew wannabe who I abhor. Unfortunatly my mother just doesn't see it so for the sake of my relationship with her, which is very close, I keep my mouth shut and endure the few times I have to see him at family gatherings.
I did have the joy of being the first one to hold my little sister after the midwife -she was born at home. But the joy of helping take care of them was soon replaced with the onus of being the eldest and so taking all the blame for anything, the test run before they got their parenting skills somewhat more worked out. Added to that being a step-child made things rather uncomfortable. I still shutter when I hear someone use the joking phrase "beaten like a red-headed step-child". What fun...

I have a sister, 4 years younger, my carbon copy in facial characteristics. In addition, I have a brother, 2 years younger, who looks German (you know, blond, blue eyed etc). If I get my scanner repaired, i will post a photo of him at the age of 6. He looks like a member of Hitlerjugend.

I am an only child - but I see the bond that brothers and sisters can have - as my wife has 4 siblings. I think that there are pros and cons to both situations.

I had but one "demi-sibling", a half brother twelve years older than I. We loathed each other and were never reconciled, despite some efforts on my part, until his death in 1999.We had so little in common and were so far apart in age that I always thought of myself as an only child.

Two younger sisters and one older brother, and though at times they make my blood boil and I might shout and rave at them I would neverthless give my life for any of them. We share the skeletons in our closets and there is nothing I would not trust on them. But like I said, that does not mean that I would like them all the time, they are very much their own, strong personas and much of the time the clashes are inevitable...Our parents raised us as a strong unit, as a strong family and that will never cease.

    That's a wonderful thought.

I have a one younger blood brother. I have a half sister, an adopted sister (second child with a different father of my dad's first wife), and a half (?) sister (third child of an even different father of my dad's first wife) whom I have met. Apparently, my Dad has other children but I have never met them.

My eldest half sister and I have a good relationship even though we are not able to see each other often.

I have a good relationship with my brother but we are very similar in a lot of respects so that makes for frequent arguments and petty quarrels. Our relationship is a lot better now than in previous years because we have not lived under the same roof for over a year now. Though recent events have made me see this small world in a different light.

I have an excellent relationship with my Dad. I am probably closer to him than anyone but it is very hard watching him destroy his body with cigarettes (he has been hospitalized at least a dozen times in the past few years.) I think his illness has brought my brother and I closer together...we are both trying to resolve the same situation...

    Re: Siblings

I found out something when doing a genealogy project for school a while back.
My mom has 3 half sisters.

    So it's
Mom - 2 full siblings, a sister and a brother. 3 half sisters.
