Coyotes Kill Woman on Hike in Canadian Park

Coyotes kill woman on hike in Canadian park
Press Writer Rob Gillies, Associated Press Writer – Wed Oct 28, 7:09 pm ET

TORONTO – Two coyotes attacked a promising young musician as she was hiking alone in a national park in eastern Canada, and authorities said she died Wednesday of her injuries.

The victim was identified as Taylor Mitchell, 19, a singer-songwriter from Toronto who was touring her new album on the East Coast.

She was hiking solo on a trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia on Tuesday when the attack occurred. She was airlifted to a Halifax hospital in critical condition and died Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Coyotes, which also are known as prairie wolves, are found from Central America to the United States and Canada.

Wildlife biologist Bob Bancroft said coyote attacks are extremely rare because the animals are usually shy.

Bancroft, a retired biologist with Nova Scotia's Department of Natural Resources, said it's possible the coyotes thought Mitchell was a deer or other prey.

"It's very unusual and is not likely to be repeated," Bancroft said. "We shouldn't assume that coyotes are suddenly going to become the big bad wolf."

Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokeswoman Brigdit Leger said other hikers heard Mitchell's screams for help on Tuesday and called emergency police dispatchers.

Police who were in the area reached the scene quickly and shot one of the animals, apparently wounding it. But the wounded animal and a companion coyote managed to get away.

Paul Maynard of Emergency Health Services said Mitchell already was in critical condition when paramedics arrived on the scene and had multiple bite wounds over her entire body.

"She was losing a considerable amount of blood from the wounds," he said.

An official with Parks Canada said they blocked the entrance to the trail where Mitchell was attacked and were trying to find the animals to determine what prompted such an unusual attack.

"There's been some reports of aggressive animals, so it's not unknown," said Helene Robichaud, the park's superintendent. "But we certainly never have had anything so dramatic and tragic."

Mitchell was an up-and-coming folk and country musician who was nominated for a 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award in the Young Performer of the Year category.

"Words can't begin to express the sadness and tragedy of losing such a sweet, compassionate, vibrant, and phenomenally talented young woman," Lisa Weitz, Mitchell's manager, said in an e-mail. "She just turned 19 two months ago, and was so excited about the future."

She went for a walk alone in the forest without any sort of way to defend herself?

Toronto is a breeding ground for idiots. There is nothing tragic about this, what is tragic is how stupid Liberalism makes people.

    What you should do...

This is a horrible freak incedent that probably could have been prevented. If you ever find yourself in such a situation this is what you should:
Make yourself a threat. If the animal thinks you to be to big a threat then it almost always will back down and run off. To be threatening make yourself appear large and strong. NEVER run away, don't even turn your back for it will show you to be weak and the animal will capitilize on that. To get away slowly back away. NEVER go alone. You are strong in #s.

None of them frantically tried to reach her?
Only in this day and age does the sound of a screaming women being mauled to death cause people to wait for the police.

Here are some wise words I read once:

"Citizens need to learn to protect themselves and each other and not have to rely on the police, who usually show up way too late.
Most of the time all the police can do is call someone to clean up the mess

I don't think she was an idiot. If animal attacks are rare in the area you can't expect people to walk around armed, she was just unlucky.

To go into the wilderness unarmed was her folly. She could have at least carried a walking stick. Maybe if she was smart enough to think of these things she would be alive.

    Natural selection at work.

Coyotes or the brush Wolf as we call them in Pennsylvania are much more agressive than their western smaller cousins. I personally had one charge me once while I was grouse hunting ,but even though I spend a tremendous amount of time in the woods this is still rare.Children in the mountains at remote bus stops have also been attacked . To walk in any forest unarmed is pure stupidity ,however ,as even if you are not a hunter ,a firearm can be used to ward off hazardous animals or to signal rescuers if you are injured.Unfortunately people see the great beauty of nature but fail through inexperience to recognize the danger. Both sides of nature must be experienced to be understood. This unfortunate person paid with their life.

Well no, you should always be on guard. I never leave my house without a knife, yet I have never been attacked. It is just common sense.

This happens daily with people simply walking down a street, then some deranged Negro or whatever attacks them. But the media will never mention this.

Liberalism, at least as I understand the concept, teaches people that someone else will defend them (like the government) from animals with two or four legs.

This person probally believed that Nova Scotia was a Disney film and not a natural habitat.

Exactly not only will someone else solve your problems and protect you like Jesus, the church, government, police etc. but remember that animals are perfect. Only us humans are flawed. They are more afraid of you than you are of it. If she was attacked she must have done something. To suggest otherwise would be speciest. If anything we need to spend more money on helping animals and give them bigger welfare checks. It is obviously society's fault that the animal did this.

I'm going to divide skadi into two groups. I will treat one like animals and the other as humans. When the animal group underperforms it will prove that we are all the same and humans inherently speciest.
