Whatever I think a German must to be proud of any page of the history of his people, ancient or modern, is my opinion that the period when we were called barbarians is one of the more brilliant. In one hand we faced a powerful empire, in decadence but powerful anyway, in the other side we stayed against the savage Asian hordes and depicting these consequences we conquered Rome, destroyed the Hunes, and above all, preserved our traditions and values.

This is my first post in quite a while, but this topic is a bit sensitive to me. The Germanic culture was great. My problem comes from the label "barbarian". Germanic tribes had advanced social dynamics (having moved to a stage beyond authoritarian states), kept themselves autonomous, and therefore cohesive, and had advanced gender relations compared to the rest of Europe for centuries to come.

Ashamed of the past? Not sure what I should be ashamed of. Is it ok to call them barbarians? Only for the culturally, and historically illiterate.

Even today in our schools, children are taught that the Germanic tribes were barbarians and that their (our!) culture was inferior. Our enemies (the Romans) and their descendants (christian church) are still dictating and distorting history, because current historians fail to take an independent look at our history.

The Germanics were ferocious in battle, but had vivid and social communities. Their religion and mythology shows that they were capable of complex thinking and that they were gifted storytellers. This is not barbarism, this is civilization. Of course it was not as refined and decadent and the Greeks and Romans, but who wants that?

So, feeling shame? No way. I think the schools should teach children of our history and heritage. We should discard the opinions of our (former) enemies as worthless and irrelevant and tell our own story.

I have to admit to not being the least bit ashamed of it considering who applied the name.. I'm not going to lay into the Mediterranean peoples.. but suffice to say my opinion of their "Classical period" isn't as rosy as the intelligentsia would want it to be.

If you look up the term 'Barbarian' this is what you'll find.

    Barbarian
    Pronunciation: \bär-ˈber-ē-ən\
Etymology: Latin barbarus — more at barbarous
1 : of or relating to a land, culture, or people alien and usually believed to be inferior to another land, culture, or people
2 : lacking refinement, learning, or artistic or literary culture.
Were the Germanic Tribes inferior or lacking in refinement or in learning, artistic or literary culture?

    No, not so much.

The Romans were just sick of getting their asses kicked, so they came up with a term to disparage the Germanic Tribes in order to make them seem more animal like.

(I mean afterall, who else but 'animals' could slaughter countless legions?)

In WWII the Americans used the term 'Jap' and posted pictures of slant eyed buck toothed Tojo Japanese soldiers with thick round rimmed glasses bayoneting Chinese babies or threating American Women. In every war there's going to be propaganda and insults flying around in addition to the arrows, spears and bullets.

In short the Barbarian tag is just leftover Roman propaganda.

However it does make my heart swell a little bit to learn that our one time enemies feared our ancestors so much that they pissed themselves at the mere thought of an attack and had to come up with such a term to make themselves feel a little bit better about themselves (even though it wasn't true...the German 'Barbarians' had refinement and a culture all their own, they were just good at hacking up Romans as well and ultimately they won).

So in a way it's kind of a compliment if you think about if, so I'm fine with the term.

Ashamed?? Not one bit. The term "barbarian", no doubt rose form ethnocentric views, while they completely ignored their own "barbaric" actions.

I still get called a barbarian. The 1st time was as a young,
"innocent abroad" in Denmark, when I turned down a glass of fine
French wine ( the only wine I had ever tasted was Ripple).
My host, a very cultured Danish Physician with a passion for fine wines,
looked at me aghast and exclaimed " You're a Barbarian!!"
I have since done my best to make amends in the wine department.

The origin of the term is onomatopoetic, in reference to the unintelligible 'bar-bar' sound that Greek ears heard when listening to a foreign language.

Was the civilization of the Germanic peoples a good thing? For us? Indeed

    Ashamed? Nope. Nor angry.

OK to be barbaric? We weren't barbaric in the first place, I feel.

I don't believe there is anything to be ashamed of from our ancestors. The Germanic people were never barbarians in the first place. I don't like that they are portrayed as savage barbarians though. They were fierce warriors, but had a good culture too.
