Come and See (1985) - Russian Film

Has anyone else seen this film?, I heard about it recently and managed to find a copy at a film store in London.

Come and See (Russian: Иди и смотри, Idi i smotri; lit. "Go and look") directed by Elem Klimov, is a 1985 Soviet war movie and psychological horror drama about and occurring during the Nazi German occupation of the Belarussian SSR, in 1943. Aleksei Kravchenko and Olga Mironova star as the protagonists Florya and Glasha.[1] The screenplay is by Ales Adamovich and Elem Klimov; the title derives from The Apocalypse of John, Chapter 6:
    --
The 2006 UK DVD sleeve states that the guns in the film were often loaded with live ammunition as opposed to blanks, for realism. Aleksei Kravchenko mentions in interviews that bullets sometimes passed just 4 inches (10 centimeters) above his head (such as in the cow scene).

I was critical of this film, It is one of the most Brutal depictions of war I have ever seen. It seems to portray the SS Troops / Volunteers as mindless animals. I'm assuming that it is meant to depict the SS-Sturmbrigade Dirlewanger... but rather loosely based.

Overall I found it to lack substance and it is obviously heavily pro-Soviet as it was made in the era. I am still yet to see a film that reflects the Brutality and Inhumane activities of the Red army.

Normally I would not watch such a film, but had known about it's existance for a long time so decided to give it a try. Would be interested in anyone elses opinion.

It's quite hard to get hold of a DVD copy, but I found has been posted in parts on you tube. If anone is interested in taking a look.

*Beware very much an adult only film although does not contain Nudity (Scences of violence & War)

I was asked by a friend to watch it and pretty much came to the same idea you had. I would not recommend this film to anyone as is very much a anti-German propaganda film.

Thankyou JB, I feel I must clarify this film doesn't come with my reccomendation, I just wanted to get others opinion on this one dimensional and bias view of the conduct of German and Volunteer Bellorussian forces within the SS.

I am sickened by the bias and lack of acknowledgement of war crimes commited by the Soviets, of course if people were educated properly about the attrocities commited by them in WW2 and beyond then people would be able to see through films such as this which have entered the mainstream.

Little is made of the fact that when the Soviets liberated Concentration camps they often raped the prisoners. Even their own Russian women werent safe.

I would give this film a Generous 1 out of 10 the only point being for it's filming techniques on a technical level. Although I found the use of live ammunition rather disturbing, Animal rights protesters would no doubt fume about the killing of the Cow purely for its dramatic effect

I have not seen that, but thanks to your advice, I never will! The former Eastern Bloc did create quality science-fiction though, like Solaris, First Spaceship on Venus, & The Planet of Prehistoric woman.
