    Should There Be Church Tax?

Some Germanic countries and other European ones have church tax. It means the members of the congregations have to pay an amount of money to their church.

    Here from Wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_tax

An interesting fact about the origin of the church tax:

The church tax is historically rooted in the pre-Christian Germanic custom where the chief of the tribe was directly responsible for the maintenance of priests and religious cults.
Do you support church tax or not? Why?
What about for the people who do not belong to any recognized religious organization? In Germany, they don't not have to pay it. But in Iceland, they have to pay the same amount to the University of Iceland.

That's really bizarre! I've never heard of such a thing. I honestly do not believe that a Church tax is necessary. People give to a church or other non-profit organization, because they want to or can afford to. That's the way it should be, in my opinion.

Well, Germany has a mandatory church tax and I think it´s a shame and a severe nuisance. It disturbs the established seperation between state and church.
One can leave the church to stop paying the church tax when reaching adulthood but this step has some associated disadvantages for most of the people, like no church wedding or no automatic right for a place in a cementary. Many people hate to pay the church tax but they stay within the church (and pay) to avoid the above mentioned disadvantages.

I don't think there should be church tax.
In Denmark, even those who aren't members of the church indirectly fund it,
because they pay taxes to the government and the government funds it.

No, the concept seems odd. We should have less taxing, if anything.

Yes. this is not a government tax. This is basically saying that if you are a member you pull your own weight. I think there are different ways of doing it. Some can pay their dues through volunteer work etc. There could also be hardship waivers. This makes more sense than "just give whatever you want" so one person is a leach and the other member is pulling the weight of others.

though I think everyone that pays money in has a say in how its spent. Therefore records of where every cent goes should be kept and there should be votes or some discussion on budget spending.

I think both models could work though but I'd lean towards the tax one. Though this is only for members not for people visiting the church.

If it is regulated trough the government then my answer is no. However what is wrong with giving money to support something you believe in?

I don't see the problem with members of a church, who willingly stay members, contributing to sustain the church. It shouldn't be a very high tax, something that everyone can afford. I echo the question, what is wrong with supporting the religion you believe in?
