    Ban on Alcohol?

I have been following Bärin's interesting thread on Outlawing tobacco
    http://forums.skadi.net/showthread.php?t=122464

it has been mentioned the possibility of banning alcohol alongside tobacco.

The purpose of creating this thread is because I think it would be interesting to discuss it further, without interfering with the Tobacco discussion

Would you support a ban on alcohol? I think it would be interesting to read peoples opinion on this.

Although I dont agree with a total ban I certainly agree there should be restrictions on the amount of alcohol that is available at low cost. And encourages the binge drinking behaviour that certainly troubles the UK.

Banning Alcohol is not a good idea. Take for example prohibition in the US, nobody stopped drinking they just became criminals. Corruption flourished, crime skyrocketed, and people started making nasty things like bathtub gin.

Absolutely not. Alcohol is one of the goods Germans buy frequently. Due to certain taxes the state gets a lot of money from the consumers. I doubt the government could afford to prohibit it as this would mean much lower revenues for them. Same goes for cigarettes.

Plus, it is none of the state's concern what I spend my money for. People wouldn't stop to buy alcohol anyways.

Alcohol plays a major part in the social life of the nation. Of course, I believe it must be brought back under control. The binge drinking culture that has developed in Britain for example is nothing but the degenerate dregs of society running around city and town centres making a nuisance of themselves.

I would like to see a return of the traditional pub culture.

I am of the opinion it would be hard to eradicate alcohol, The prohibition in the U.S. is a perfect example.

There are those would not be able to drink mead and other alcohol products in accordance with their religion, unless it was exempted under religious grounds. I think raising the age limit for buying alcohol would benifit from being raised to a standard 21 years of age.

Further taxation of Alcohol would perhaps counter the availibilty problems.

The binge drinking culture that has developed in Britain for example is nothing but the degenerate dregs of society running around city and town centres making a nuisance of themselves.
I speak from a British perspective on this issue, I definately think Alcohol is far too widely available at cheap prices.

It's more than just the price of alcohol that is the problem however, it is the attitude held by young and even middle-aged people towards alcohol.

I would up the tax on alcohol, raise the club/bar/pub age to 21 and hand out drinking bans to those who simply cannot handle their drink. But an outright ban on alcohol will not solve anything. Especially since I am such a whiskey fan !

Homemade liquor is fine if it is made right. I keep a quart or two of moonshine around for medicinal purposes of course.

They had Stella Artois during Prohibition ?

I have never actually tasted the stuff my self.

However, you did mention that bathtub-gin is the sort of drink that kills you. But do we as a people not measure the success of our drinking by how messed up we are the next day ?

I wouldnt support a ban. In Norway we have alot of moonshine makers and its popular to mix it with coffee, this is called karsk Its not real karsk if its mixed with vodka etc.
I think there would be more smugling and homedistilling if it got banned, there has been some cases where people have died cause they got wrong type of alcohol. The smugglers dosnt care if what they sell is deadly.
