I've not seen a fishing thread and I'm curious what your view on fishing is.
Is fishing right or wrong? Is fishing cruelty to animals? I know groups as PETA are opposed. Are you a fisher and what do you like to fish?

Yes, I like to fish although I don't go as much as I used to. Some of the things I fish for are crappie, smallmouth bass, salmon, trout, walleye, bluegill and catfish. I don't fish as much because I don't eat as much fish as I used to.
Fishing has been abandoned as a leisure and recreational activity (as during weekends and family outings) in the late years. Nowadays supermarkets sell live fish from water tanks. It's more expensive than the already processed fish. So fishing is mostly commercial.
Sport or leisure fishing is very popular in the US and Canada. Some people spend large amounts of money on sport fishing. The inland bass boats can cost $30,000 and up not to mention all the tackle. Some families base their vacation time around it.
I live near a good sized lake and it always has boats on it when the water is not frozen. Personaly I like to fish in small farm ponds that farmers have for their cattle or go North to the Great Lakes area for salmon and walleye.
We have a rowing boat and I enjoy being out to sea fishing and rowing. My ancestors up north have all been fishing and I have several relatives that was lost on the sea. Mostly I get cod, mackerel and coalfish. There is suppoused to be some trout outside in the sea where I live, but I dont have any fishing gear here.
Sometimes when out on a larger boat with a friend we catch rose fish (aka ocean perch, Norway haddock, red perch, redfish, or hemdurgan), it is really nice when salted and boiled.
PETA = People Eating Tasty Animals!
I think that sums up what I think of PETA! Besides, what are they going to do, stop me from fishing? Then what is next?
I used to fish when I was a kid, but around here mostly what you can get with a basic rod and hook/worm is bottom feeders and an invasive species or two. I'm not really into sport fishing--I watch some of these shows and these people treat it like a game, and I'm not really into that. Nature needs to be treated with more respect. Unfortunately, aside from sport fishing, commercial fishing has caused much harm. The Great Lakes have been decimated by the commercial fishery, and many of the "desirable" fish like salmon and trout are stocked or introduced species.
I like fish, but don't eat it that often and I never ate anything that I caught. The meat was too contaminated.
I literally just got back from my last day fishing for the rest of the year, getting too cold out now. Just a few mins ago I got done gutting and cleaning my bag of trout. Fishing is a great pastime and a great way to reduce stress if you are into some fish. It's a very Germanic activity to enjoy. We must strive to get youngsters involved in fishing at a very early age like I was as they generally will then grow up to be lifelong fishers.
As far as cruelty, how about we ask Peta about the ridiculous amounts of animals they starve, provide poor shelter for and kill off every year?
I used to fish when younger, but like others, I never actually ate it. I either put it back or gave it to someone who wanted it.
I think commercial fishing itself is fine, but the large trollers need to be more regulated. They end up catching the wrong fish and just throw them away. It is a complete waste. It is no different than clear cutting a forest.
Sport fishing I also see as stupid. I know no one that does that here, as it seems more like an American thing.
I think just normal, community or individual fishing is fine, as long as people make sure they are not damaging the fish stock.
As for PETA... I do not think they understand anything about fishing, so just ignore them. But also do not act as if they only go around killing animals, as they likely do more than you [no directed at anyone specifically] do.
I think fishing is a great way of relaxing and enjoying yourself, it is very natural and brings you closer to nature... It is one of those rare sports where it is just as pleasing to take part as a solo activity as enjoy it with a group of friends. Growing up in a more rural area, things could get quite boring.. But luckily there are healthy and natural activities such as fishing.
I have been keen on fishing for the past 20 years, mainly coarse (freshwater) fishing from lakes and rivers. In East Anglia we have the Norfolk Broads, which make excellent habitat for a wide variety of Marine life. Including the rare Bittern. Description and History of the Norfolk Broads I have also tried fishing in the Canary Islands... which was quite an experiance as it's reasonably close to North Africa, bigger fish and change of scenery.
As for groups such as PETA trying to label fishing a viscious bloodsport, it is completely idiotic. We have hunted fish for many thousands of years.... yes people do get pleasure, its not just for food. In this country it is required that you put fish back into the river, I am not reffering to game or ocean fishing here,,, you may still fish for your dinner in that situation. As for causing the fish pain with a hook, I feel little sympathy.
Hunting is an important part of our heritage, it is a tradition we must uphold as it was/is fundamental to our existance.
