    The Aftermath

They all look pretty much the same. But these following photographs cover everything that had once been the historic center of town that you saw in the previous post.
Over a million refugees fleeing from the soviets as well as the citizens of Dresden were jam packed into the city center.
The RAF and other apologists claim that out of that one million, only 35,000 were killed by the bombings as well as the ensuing firestorm.
Personally, I feel that 300,000 to maybe half a million would be a more accurate estimation.

Some of the pictures of the aftermath unfortunately look like the typical American inner city.

The pictures of what the city used to look like have made me curious about it. Dresden looked like a nice, clean metropolitan neighborhood.

I wish I could show you more than just the reconstructed Neumarkt, but they have only just begun to rebuild what was lost during the war and this is as far as they have gotten.
It is hoped that more communist blocks will be torn down and replaced with the traditional architecture.
First you will see preliminary drafts, followed by scale models, then photographs of the Neumarkt, which is almost completed.

    The Rebirth Of The Neumarkt

This one below will be the future Dresden Castle.
I really recommend enlarging this to get an idea of its intricate details.
The image after gives you an idea of just how big it is going to be.

Here are a few recent photos Dresden.

    (Please click for larger image)

The following before/after images are of the Altmarkt.
In my opinion they should have rebuilt it in the same way they have the Neumarkt.
This compromise of modernistic buildings is not keeping with the spirit of Dresden's rebirth as an historically important center for Baroque architecture.

    Before - 1900

    After - 2009

Here are some videos that were filmed of Dresden prior to the war.
It is heartbreaking to know that most of the people you see walking the streets here probably died in the firestorm.

    Barockstadt Dresden (1936)

    Dresden unzerstört 1939

This is a fascinating video of a place in Dresden known as the Panometer.
It is of a gigantic panoramic painting that depicts Dresden as it looked in 1756.

Thanks for the great pictures, the city is still beautiful and appears to be planned fairly well from what I can see and is definitely still Germanic in appearance, but it's not anywhere near as ornate and historic looking as it used to be, what a shame. Still, I'm glad the city planners tried to evoke the old feel of the city.

After a prolonged delay they will soon begin construction on Quarter VI, the last section of the Neumarkt yet to be built.

The top photograph was taken in 2005. You can see the the progress that has been made since then by looking at the recent photo right below it:
    (Please enlarge for full effect)

The following images will show how much progress has been made on the streets connecting to the market.
