    German Band of Brothers

Let me first start off by saying that in my opinion, World War II is a deeply saddening topic and was nothing more than a senseless conflict of brother versus brother. That said, there were some amazing stories of bravery, courage, and fellowship that came out it, and while it's not surprising, it seems that the Allied forces are the only ones to have their stories dramatized in films and tv series such as Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. I've enjoyed these shows for the parts that aren't trying to make some political point or bash Germany, but I'm dissapointed that there hasn't been really anything made to show the German side of the story. So basically what I'm interested in is the stories of soliders fighting on the German side. Stories of heroicism, friendship, grand battles, and the same type of personal perspective that were shown in the films and shows I mentioned. I'd even like to try to make a short independent film on the subject if someone can turn me on to a story that I find especially engaging. Basically what I'm asking for here is a little direction or suggestion as to where to find some first account tales of what the German soliders faced during World War II instead of the usual Germans are evil monsters propaganda that is put out there. Thanks.

[sarcasm]Are you mad? There were no heroes from evil Germany![/sarcasm]

Unfortunately I do not know of any war stories like those of Saving Private Ryan, but I'm sure they exist.

VinlandViking: Thanks for taking time to read my thread and leave a reply.

I was hoping someone here might even have had a relative that shared stories with them but it seems personal stories of German soldiers during WW2 are hard to come by.

Damn, finally someone with a good taste in films. Das Boot is my favourite out of everything ever made.

Timberwolf, I know you're looking for films, but I remember playing a computer game called Silent Storm when I was a teenager. It's about leading an english (or american?) or german special force (your choice) through a series of missions in the context of WW2. I don't remember much about the allied campaign (I don't think I even played it), but I always enjoyed the german missions, both story- and gameplay-wise. It has that certain "dirty dozen" feeling, you're fighting with a bunch of Wehrmacht specialists (sniper, technician, stormtrooper...) against the allies, always being outnumbered and creating bold plans how to win against the odds. It was quite heroic

It's a turn-based game, so I could even play the game with friends of mine, where every one of us played one character (I always played the pioneer, for your interest )

I know computer games aren't for everyone, but I wanted to mention it anyways. I know quite some WW2 enthusiasts who loved this game!

This is a very sad movie but well worth the watch.

    Stalingrad

It is by the same people who made das Boot, If you do not speak German there is sub-titles.

This is one of my favorite WWII movies. I wish more Americans would watch it. The one thing I don't like is that it has a few anti NSDAP lines.

Great games, I like the company of heroes series of PC based games too. The only trouble is, the germans always seem to have their ENIGMA communications intercepted and it doesn't matter how good one is, if the enemy knows what your next move is going to be it is hard to ever win!

I do have a short story from a WWII Wehrmacht veteran. He was in the infantry and was fighting in the winter of 41-42 in Russland. Over 10,000 Russians attacked his Division's defensive positions. They used 20mm guns and machine guns to stop the assault. They killed more than 5,000. He said the bodies and blood were everywhere, they did not know why they kept attacking. It turned out the russians had a little liquid courage (vodka) before the battle!

Im not sure if you are exclusively after films, but an excellent book on the German perspective is Soldier X. I got it from the library and it really opened my eyes to how vicious the Russinas were to Germany after they had invaded, and really personifies the German side as well. It follows the account of a young German soldier, true story, but if I recall correctly it blends the account of two German soldiers, very interesting.

I have a friend is in his early 80's and is from Regensburg,Germany. His father fought and was captured in the battle of Stalingrad. He said that they received letters from him well into the 1950's and then they just stopped. Yet, according to the media the Germans were the bad guys in WWII.

The Bolsheviks were Bastards, that is clear...the trouble is after the war Germans and anyone associated with them were poison. The Russians could get away with treating prisoners the way they wanted to! It wasn't just the russians, but many western countries were just as cruel. I do remember quite a few stories of "collaborators" and their "bastard" children being brutalized well into the 1970s. Mostly from Scandinavian and Benolux countries, how sad....
