    Height of the Nordids?

Is the whole nordid type characterized as being tall? Is one automatically not to be considered nordid on the basis of short stature? This may sound like a stupid question, but I figured this would be the best place to ask it.

Actually I just recently joined this board because I find this forum to be the one most relevant to my interests and I have a similar question about Nordics.

My family is mostly English-German, with some Irish, and have done extensive genealogical research which, through Francis Cook goes back to the medieval period. All of my post 1500 ancestors were from England, Germany, Netherlands, and some from Ireland. My father, his brothers, his father, and my mothers brothers and father are all tall, ranging from 6ft to 6'4ft. My mother, for some odd reason, is very short, around 5'3. The result is I am a 20 year old male who just barely hits 5'8.

I was born with light copper hair that turned blonde and now is like a dark blonde with reddish hue. I have the fairest skin of anyone I know, blue-green eyes, and golden arm/leg hair. So I always considered myself falling into the Nordic subrace over Med or Alpine. Then I read more in depth about Germanics/Nordics and tall stature seems to always factor in. Why then am I short?

Are there short Nordics? Or am I mistaken as to proclaiming myself Nordic?

I'm not sure what height Nordids are supposed to be, but I do know that average heights of various populations have flutuated quite a bit over the course of time. Did you know for instance, that the average height of hunter gatherers prior to the neolithic agricultural revolution 10000 years ago, was 5' 10" for men and 5' 6" for women, which is probably taller than the average European height today.
I know that the average Roman centurian serving in ancient Briton was a mere 5' 2" and the average ancient Briton was 5' 8" We know this from skeletons recovered. Considering the elite warrior class of the Cets were probably taller than average. This may explain why Gauls and Britons and Germanics are often described as giants.

In short, I think the average height of populations is based more on how healthy their diet is than it is on genes ?
People today aren't getting taller exactly, we're just getting back to where we used to be.

I would sum up by saying that Nordids have enjoyed a fairly healthy diet than more southerly Europeans, but there would also have been variations amongst individuals.

I do not believe the diet thing. I have seen many Inuit people here that are probably 4 feet, yet they only eat what they can hunt/find; like Gauls, as example. I tend to eat what an Italian eats, and I am 5"11.

I think it must be evolution, therefore genetics. I doubt we are going backwards, as that makes no sense. Europe has got taller because it has got more Germanics.

That might explain things. I was reared on a mostly unhealthy diet, so maybe thats why I am not as tall as your classic Nordic. Its a shame because my paternal grandfather was 6'4, blonde, ice blue eyes etc. It also a shame that I still a fiend for fast food, its a hard habit to break

Whoa ! I think I have explained myself poorly here...
I was talking about "average" height amongst populations here. That is, the average height of the average member of that population over the course of time. The average height of the average man living here in Britain, for instance, has flutuated up and down by about eight inches or so, depending upon the living conditions the average man was living in.
Another example is, in the past, nobles were often several inches taller than the peasants, even though they carried the same genes. This can only be put down to better quality living conditions.
Prior to the neolithic revolution (as mentioned earlier)the average height of humans was much taller than it became after we started farming. Once we started farming, our diet became poorer, though we were able to increase our populations due to a surplus of food, even though that food was lesser quality. We became smaller to compesate for this. A sort of quantity rather than quality solution
Another thing, Romans inspite of their advanced technology, civilisation etc. had a lousy diet compared to us so called barbarians. Hence, the difference in height and physical stature between us.
Obviously, there are other factors which determine a persons height. I'm just pointing out, that the main determining factor for a :population: is diet and living conditions.

I have studied the evidence of many Viking grave sights and the average man "Warrior" was about 5'11" and Viking female 5'9" . Slaves of Viking blood were some what smaller. This was close to 1 foot taller than any othe tribe of that period except of course the Germanic tribes which were about the same size. The tallest Viking skeleton I believe was 6'4" that was found. Europe has been plagued by the eating of grain which makes you weak and small.Hunter gatherers who ate WILD MEAT ,nuts ,berries ,fruits, eggs ,natural vegetables and other things they gathered and foraged were not only larger ,but much stronger and had fewer ailments and diseases. The advent of farming for GRAIN is the worst thing that happened to European man's health and stature

Yeah grains are heavy in phyloestrogens too- female hormone. Modern Soybean is even higher. This had a de-masculanizing effect on the whole population. Grains are good for you but in limited quantities. Problem is with modern meat eaters the meat you buy at the store is so unhealthy unless you know someone who raises it themselves or something.

In Cincinnati we have a lot of 100 year old houses. The door ways and such are made smaller. In a mere 100 years the average height has gone up. It's related to improvements in diet and not any genetic changes. I am tall compared to my grandparents as are most people in the U.S. and Europe. I would say I am closer to a normal height for my genes and my grandparents had a poor diet. Many people today are getting bigger than what they should be genetically because of growth hormone in the milk and meat. They shoot it up into the animals to get more yields and it remains in the meat, you eat it and it effects you as well. Studies have proven that young females who drink hormone laced milk grow breasts at a younger age, hit puberty younger and have larger breasts. Same hormones made to make the cow have a lot of milk hits the human. They also try to mature cattle and animals quickly these hormones are causing humans to hit puberty at a younger age (as is better diet). Now blacks and others naturally have younger puberty but whites are younger than they used to be. 50 years ago girls were hitting puberty around 16 on average, now its around 12 years old. I see girls in high school that look like they are in their 20s.

A good point is Ireland. The Irish had been eating potatoes for hundreds of years and when I visit there I was amazed at how small every one was .Yet I have a lot of irish friends in this country who are pretty big boys .It is amazing what some decent food will do over a couple of generations. The Vikinigs had poor farm land and the early Germans raised animals but did not farm much in the first century, and they were larger to begin with and were eating a lot of wild meat and fish and gathering berries and fruits ect.A combination of good genetics and good diet made the Nordiks and Germans bigger and stronger than the average tribe of their time.

A great example of this is the well known Chinese mummies. Women to 6', men to 6'6." They would look like gods walking down a modern street.
