Thatcher Feared Nazi's Rise if Wall Fell

LONDON, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher feared the fall of the Berlin Wall would lead to a rise of Nazi-ism in Germany, government documents indicate.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office documents, to be released Friday, revealed the anxiety both Thatcher and French President Francois Mitterrand had after the wall came down in 1989, The Daily Telegraph said.

The documents indicated Mitterrand warned Thatcher that a unified Germany might "make even more ground than had Hitler."

Thatcher's opposition to reunification and her disagreement with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office over the matter also emerged, the newspaper said.

In one document, she reportedly considered the views of Christopher Mallaby, the British ambassador to Germany, "alarming," and expressed astonishment that he seemed to welcome the prospect of a united Germany.

The British government's publication of the papers comes ahead of 20th anniversary celebrations of the fall of the wall.

Margaret Thatcher, typical Churchillian school ("Germany is to blame for all") Torrie, thus pro-Israel, anti-German.

    Anti-Germanism

Just two days ago i happened to post this one on SF.

Remember 1989/90, the fall of the Berlin Wall, followed by the merger of the Soviet Zone with the Western Zones (Yeah, i know officially it was GDR+FRG)? I do.
There were only 2 countries in the world who were "upset" and opposed to it, and this wasn't the USA nor the declining USSR.
These voices of protest came from London (Margaret Thatcher) and Tel-Aviv (Itzhak Shamir).
    Two years later:
Despite protests from Germany as well as some in Britain, the Bomber Harris Trust (an RAF veterans' organisation formed to defend the good name of their commander) erected a statue of him outside the RAF Church of St. Clement Danes, London in 1992. It was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother who looked surprised when she was jeered by protesters. The line on the statue reads "The Nation owes them all an immense debt."

I just say, Germans, pay attention who the real enemy of the German people (not only of those in Europe) and nation is.
"Chamberlain has now appointed Vansittart, our most important and toughest foe, to a position where he can play a leading role in the diplomatic game against Germany. Henceforth -regardless of what tactical interludes of conciliation may be attempted with regard to us- every day that our political calculations are not actuated by the fundamental idea that England is our most dangerous enemy, would be a gain for our enemies." Secret British government documents to be published on Friday reveal the deep anxieties felt by Margaret Thatcher and François Mitterrand, the French president, following the fall of the wall.

The documents, published by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, show that Mr Mitterrand privately warned Lady Thatcher that a reunited Germany might "make even more ground than had Hitler".

They also show that in January 1990, weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Mr Mitterrand warned Lady Thatcher that the prospect of reunification was turning the Germans into the "bad" people they used to be.

One document refers to her expressing horror on hearing an incorrect report that the members of the Bundestag in Bonn sang Deutschland uber alles to celebrate the fall of the wall.

In another document, she is reported as finding the views of Sir Christopher Mallaby, the UK ambassador to Bonn, "alarming", expressing astonishment that he appeared to welcome the prospect of a united Germany.

The Government's decision to publish the papers, ahead of Germany's 20th anniversary celebrations of the fall of the wall, will be seen as an attempt to show that officials were positive about reunification early on, despite Lady Thatcher's personal concerns.

    Woden's Day

This is a good one and i hazard to guess that the dailymail made a story from it.

Of course if that really had happened it would have created a scandal of the first order inside the FRG.

UK Documents Expose Thatcher's Virulent Opposition to German Reunification

As the 20th anniversary of the fall of Berlin Wall approaches, the British Foreign Office has released classified documents exposing the deep divisions between UK diplomats and former premier Margaret Thatcher over her virulent opposition to German reunification.

It has long been known that Helmut Kohl, who was chancellor of West Germany in 1989, had a problematic relationship with Thatcher at that time. In his memoirs, he recalled one incident in the run up to reunification in 1990 during a dinner at which Thatcher famously commented: “We’ve beaten the Germans twice already, and now they’re back!”

But the materials recently released by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) titled “German Unification 1989-1990” indicate the quite different attitude of several of her British colleagues, including her foreign secretary, Douglas Hurd, and the then British ambassador to Germany, Christopher Mallaby.

The website of German news magazine Der Spiegelreported this week that a document in the collection, written by Mallaby on November 9, 1989, for example, recalled Hurd declaring that reunification was “in our own interest.”

Whereas British diplomats were working behind the scenes to facilitate the peaceful transition of communist East Germany, they apparently were regularly perturbed by the Thatcher's unhidden opposition to reunification with West Germany.

The newly published material is also makes reference to the reticence of then French President Francois Mitterand.

Der Spiegel reported one account of a lunch at the Elysee Palace, at which the French president warned Thatcher that reunification would give Germany more influence than Hitler's state ever had and would mark a return of the “sinister Germans.”

The FCO expressed satisfaction that the new material clears up previous misunderstandings about the British attitude in general at the time and adds to the historic understanding of events 20 years ago.

"I welcome the publication of the full story of Britain’s role in German unification, thanks to the work of the FCO’s historians,” said British Minister for Europe, Baroness Kinnock, in a statement.

“This collection is a tribute to the efforts of public servants and diplomats of all nations who helped to bring to a close the long years of division in Germany, and paved the way for the stability and security that we enjoy today in Europe."

But the controversy over Thatcher's approach to reunification is likely to continue, with British daily newspaper The Times reporting on a transcript of conversation between the prime minister and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev showing the full degree to which she opposed the process.

Copies of official Kremlin records, photocopied and brought to Britain from files at Gorbachev's personal foundation by journalist Pavel Storilov, document Thatcher's conversations on the matter. The comments appear to clarify the extent to which Thatcher opposed the official Western policy to move towards reunification.

"We do not want a united Germany,” she said according to The Times.

“This would lead to a change to postwar borders, and we cannot allow that because such a development would undermine the stability of the whole international situation and could endanger our security,” she added.

Unfortunately I would have to agree. Not because the Bundeswehr is not good, they are! It is just that since 1945 many germans worry more about their 6 weeks vacation than their martial abilities! Reminds me of a conversation between AH and one of his field marshals. AH - "What happened to the fighting spirit of Winterschlacht im Osten?" FM - "The fighting spirit was buried in Russland!"

    Today, yes.
In 1940, Germany not against the world but only against Britain? I'm not so sure
