    Moose Hunting in Alaska

Here are some photos of the moose I took last night! My family and I are going to have a freezer full of healthy natural meat to eat all this winter long. Thanks to Uller, the God of the Hunt for allowing my kill, for making my aim true, and for delivering this fine young moose to me.

The smell of moose has always made me avoid it, although it does not taste too bad. It is a good more-natural alternative to beef.

It is a .300 Winchester Magnum made in Finland by Tikka. The model is a T-3. Shoots 1\4 inch MOA out of the box with factory loads so I can vouch for the accuraccy of this weapon.

My optics are a 3-9x40 scope with cross-hair reticule. I manage a 2" group at 100 yards with it.

Very light, strong and simple. Also more affordable than the Brownings, Rugers, or Winchester.

I love to eat Whitetail also. We have Sitka blacktails down in the South East part of Alaska on the islands. Most hunters go for them in boats and the area has nice black bear as well. There are generous limits on them in most areas due to their abundance.

I took this bull during the second week of September. Bulls in my area start smelling "rutty" about 14 days from now (usually). There are a few cattle ranchers here but most of Alaska's domesticated meat is imported from Oregon or Washington. We prefer game to store-meat.

here is a photo of the moose and his last rites from my kids and I. We fill his mouth with willow leaves and thank him for giving his life to feed us and ask that he speak well of our family to his ancestors in the afterlife.

    Zimobog,

Now that is a reasonable sized moose, about deer sized.
A friend, old Wayne Welch, shot a moose in Canada years ago.
They stopped on the way back and bought a freezer,
and put the moose in it and waited a few days till it froze solid,
stopped every night and plugged the freezer in.
    They made it back to Texas and Deb, {Waynes wife,}
was the first to get tired of moose meat.
Then after a while friends would turn it down.
Then Deb would't let Wayne cook it in the house.
Then... the dogs, a wolf and a hound would come out from under the house
and look at the 5 Lb moose roast Wayne had cooked for them,
turn and go back under the house.
Wayne said the moose was enormous and they had hundreds of pounds of moose meat left.
Wayne said he refused to waste an ounce and ate the whole thing alone but it took a long time and he said:
"I will never kill another moose because they are just too big.

    Good kill Zimobog

and its good to see a picture of you and your moose.

7mm is quite a lot of rifle for a fallow ! My father likes a .35 Remington semiauto or his .38-40 levergun for deer in Maine where he lives. Do folks down under use those calibers much on fallow? What are your other edible game species?

lol, yeah British Columbian moose are huge . This one dressed and quartered out to around 400 lbs, minus the ribcage and head (which I picked all the meat off... couldn't have done better unless I was a raven).
