Helene Bøksle - Germanic Songs in Old Norse Language

    Hello there,

I´ve encountered a wonderful songstress. Her name is Helene Bøksle, she´s from Norway and sings beautiful melodic and melancholic ballads, some of them in old Norse language. Well, Old Norse language isn´t commonly spoken in all Scandinavian countries anymore (as far as I know) so it´s very interesting to listen to her songs.

It´s like a time journey back to old pre-Christian Germanic times.

Here´s a fantastic example, give it a try!

    Helene Bøksle

Does anybody has the translation for the song? The lyric seems to be from the Völluspá.

Good singer, I have one of her songs on the age of conan soundtrack.
But she hasnt many norse songs, most her songs are in modern norwegian, in the nynorsk dialect.
    Lyrics (from Völluspá):
    Athr veröld steypisk
    mun engi mathr öthrum thyrna
    Knáttu vanir vígspá völlu sporna
    Skildir ro klofnir
    fyllisk fjörvi feigra manna

    The lyrics translated

    'Ere the world falls,
nor ever shall men each other spare
And the field by the warlike Wanes was trodden
    Shields are sundered.
Drains the life-force of doomed men

Voluspå was most likely written down here where I live, by icelandic skalds

"Make strong old dreams lest our world lose heart." -Ezra Pound
