How to Survive a South African House Robbery

Pretoria – Crime victims should beg for their lives and tell the robbers to take everything, in which case their lives might be spared, an academic has told a public lecture at the University of South Africa (Unisa).

People were also advised to have a panic button in the bathroom, since most men were held in bathrooms while robbers went through the house.

This was the advice of Dr Rudolph Zinn, of Unisa’s department of criminal and forensic investigations, on Wednesday.

This advice was based on interviews with 30 convicted house robbers in Gauteng prisons. They said if victims begged and followed orders, it was seen as a good sign by the robbers.

    Don’t speak to robbers

According to the criminals who participated in the study, victims’ lives would be spared if they remained calm, didn’t fight back, kept their hands visible, maintained their original position and only spoke when asked a question.

“However, if the victim doesn’t play along and follow orders, they make it look like they are hiding lots of money in the house and the longer the robbers stay in the house, the greater the chance of a rape occurring.

“Give them what they want so they can disappear quickly,” said Zinn.

These criminals also felt that if they used more violence, they got more loot from their victims.

    Respect

Zinn said the youngest hijacker he spoke to was 9 years old, and the youngest hijacker who had shot and killed his victim, was 13.

“He said the victim had not respected him as a man.”

Thirty-two percent of the respondents said they want no eye contact with victims, and expect victims to follow orders.

Furthermore, the study showed that between 53% and 79% of house robberies take place thanks to the insider-information they obtained (from, for instance, a domestic worker), and that 17% of security guards and 17% of police officers were involved in house robberies.

It also emerged that the robbers drove through neighbourhoods at night and by day, to observe the security measures in place, and whether it would be easy or difficult to get in and out at a possible target.

    About cash and jewellery

Zinn said the criminals saw farm attacks as just another form of house robberies. “The police usually take longer to get there and these are easy targets.”

“They also target [people of] any race, and studies have shown that former black neighbourhoods are hardest hit by crime.”

“There are usually four criminals per house robbery, and eight per farm attack.”

A total of 83% of house robberies are about getting cash and jewellery, and robbers spend their loot on luxuries like expensive clothes and fancy cars.

According to these criminals, it didn’t matter how a home and family was secured - if robbers wanted to get in, they would.

How about live in large families/groups, and always be excessively armed?

Communes / communal farms would certainly be safer but this type of arrangement doesn't really exist in SA. Imo it wouldn't be a bad idea to set up kibbutz / moshav type outposts or farms but I guess it would be a challenge to convince people to change their lifestyle.

Perhaps I am misinterpreting this study, but this sort of sound like criminals told the media what would be ideal for them during a robbery, and the media published what they said and encouraged victims to comply. Doesn't it seem as though there would be a lot more crime if it was that easy?

IMO the study was about not to get shot in case a crime (robbery) already occurs, not about avoiding a crime (robbery) in the first place. Provided there is a robbery going on at your place and you are not able to fight back (for instance because there are no firearms at hand at once and/or that the robbers get at you immediately), the main objective in most cases must be to stay alive, i.e. not to get shot, so following these rules cannot be bad. In situations of that kind you better have a sound understanding of the deep irrationale, i.e. the animalistic side of human nature and not try to be superior to the aggressors and play hero. In such situations, the robbers want to display absolute power, so any opposition to that claim is deeply insulting to them and must result in the destruction of either the robbers or yourself, the latter being more probable.

However, I admit: How to prevent such a crime to occur at all is a totally different question

But if more people were armed and trained they would shoot more robbers and it would not be profitable to rob houses or farms or anything for that matter.
I learned how to shoe horses from a man from South Africa and he said it was safer to live in a rural area because he kept very mean dogs.

The musing of the misplaced and muddled professor are an open exhortation to thieves and robbers to increase their radius of operations, since giving advice of that kind it is like sending a message to robbers that " the victims would know how to behave". A household must be and should be armed to the teeth, and advertise the fact that any would be robber would risk being killed. How nice, helping a robber to clean your house up; and there are no guarantees that at the end he does not put a bullet through your skull in any way.

J this would certainly be the optimal arrangement, unfortunately in South-Africa it is only under very dire circumstances that you can shoot a robber without being arrested yourself for murder or attempted murder. The law dictates that your life should be in impending danger, implying that the robber must run at you with a knife or aim a firearm before it is deemed within in your rights to discharge a firearm. Thus even if a robber is in your house browsing the local stores he has just about the right to be there, this does not constitute a valid reason to discharge a firearm at him. The problem is that things will surely go south rather sporadically, essentially the Government is creating the optimal environment for crime against Germanics to flourish. The related issue of acquiring a license to own a firearm is made a most cumbersome process full of red tape and excessive costs that deters the average persone from acquiring that which he can use to defend himself. The Government is spending more money disarming legal owners instead of attempting to police the illegal firearms (mostly old police issue 9mm and AK47 from the ANC’s armed struggle days) from the townships and the likes. Just about the only thing that can contribute to a Germanics safety is not to have anything of worth in the first place that would bring you in contention for a robbery. Apartheid and the Germanic people in South-Africa are considered the reason why the robbers are in ‘dire straights’ necessitating crime for their lively hood.
Although the word "Commando" was wrongly used to describe all Boer soldiers, a commando was a unit formed from a particular district. None of the units was organized in regular companies, battalions or squadrons. The Boer commandos were individualists who were difficult to control, resented formal discipline or orders, and earned a British jibe that"every Boer was his own general".

Here is another useful tip for persons living in our wonderful Rainbow nation. If you own a GPS do not set your home location on it. If you get Hijacked the Hijackers probably have a set of your home keys, apparently these monkeys have figured out that if they use the home location on their victims’ GPS’s and the newly acquired keys they have in their possession it is like winning a two for one sweepstakes.

"One once of prevention is worth one pound of cure."
Hi Baughman, Grimner basically answered it but my 2c worth is this:

We're perfectly capable of doing what needs to be done as we all (up to the early 1990's) spent time in the military. The problem isn't "lack of training" or "lack of motivation" to settle the matter.

The problem is that "the law" and Constitution in South Africa favours, protects and nurtures the criminal. As the report also mentioned, the police themselves are often moonlighting as these very criminals.

It's become very difficult to obtain a license to own a firearm. If you're white, probably even more so. If you were to defend yourself with such a firearm, the most likely outcome is that you will be charged with murder by the state and that you will be prosecuted, found guilty and jailed.

The SA State (under the ANC) is typically not interested in finding or prosecuting the (usually black) criminals who attacked, murdered, raped or robbed somebody (of whatever skincolour, race, religion).

It's a Catch-22 situation. When attacked, you're for all intents and purposes not allowed to protect yourself (because this is racist and it is an infraction on the "human rights" of the criminal)

    AND

naturally, The STATE won't protect you either because they're not interested, they are too corrupt and too inept.

To you guys who are arguing that "the professor's advice is wrong / misplaced", I disagree. Under the circumstances it's the best advice there is. I know it sounds crazy but conditions where you are from are different to present day South Africa.

In SA it's not only the criminal you have to fear, it is the Courts and the State as well. These are possibly an even bigger threat to your and your family's health and safety.

During a typical robbery the perpetrators simply want money and valuables. It's not worth arguing over or getting yourself or your family harmed. These attacks usually occur at night, the gangs almost certainly outnumber and outgun you. There is very little that can realistically be done to fight back in any case.

The only solutions to get out of this mess I can think of are immigration or a
liberation struggle for an own white homeland (but with NO LIBERALS as they are even worse than black criminals)
