    Question Hamburg or Berlin...

I've spend my early childhood in Germany & I haven't been there since I why 12 years old.
Im thinking of moving back soon, but not to the small town that I grew up in because there aren't that many jobs. When I get old I'd like to retire there or when I develop a family but not now.
I hear alot about how Berlin is a relatively cheap & affordable place to live.
Is this true?I would prefer living in Hamburg but many say it's very expensive.
Do you have personal experiences of living in any of the aforementioned cities?

    Thanks.

My understanding (could be wrong) is that apartments are relatively affordable in Berlin (compared to other major major EU cities). I don't know about the prices for Hamburg.

The last time I was in Berlin (about 4 years ago) it was basically one enormous building project. A lot of building and renovation work was taking place. Personally I'd look at finding something in the Eastern part of the city. The prices are bound to be lower, there'd be less gastarbeiter types etc.

    Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft / Housing Cooperative

The cheapest apartments in Germany are usually offered by housing cooperatives.

This year 2018 a compilation had been made about who owns the houses in Hamburg.

Most housing cooperations from Hamburg who own around 20% of flats and houses
joined that compilation, but the city-owned SAGA, which owns another 20%,
    not, naming privacy issues.

In total there are 700'000 flats to rent in Hamburg, and 420'000 are privately owned.

    There are 30 smaller housing cooperatives in Hamburg manging around 130'000 flats;
their squaremeter price is around 6,37 Euro and therewith around 2 Euro lesser than the average.

    German language :
„Wir zeigen gern, dass wir ein guter Vermieter sind, der 130.000 Wohnungen zu durchschnittlichen Mietpreisen
unterhalb des Mietenspiegels anbieten,“ sagte Genossenschaftsvertreterin Böhm.

Der durchschnittliche Mietpreis der Wohnungen liegt bei 6,37 Euro und damit gut zwei Euro unter dem aktuellen Mietenspiegel in Hamburg.

The compilation is a series of simple .PDF files, conatining just addresses :

I would rather be a "Hamburger" than a Berliner. Seriously, Berlin is not just Berlin or even Brandenburg. I know some Brandenburgers from work and they're very nice folks, but that's not the problem. I'm sure they're not in Brandenburg for a reason anymore. Hamburg is closer to the North Sea, which I consider the Germanic heartland, surrounded entirely as it is by Germanic nations.
