    Conditioning a Horn?

There are many opinions on conditioning a Drinking Horn for use.
After you have thoroughly cleaned it, it will still have an odor, if you drink from it. Horns are a porous organic material, ceratin, I think. Being porous
if you don't fill the pores with something, beeswax, non-toxic urethane, or other coating, the pores will retain bits of anything you drink from it. And, there is a possibility of bacteria build-up.
I know that some Folks soak their Horn overnight or a day or two with strong Ale, vodka or other strong spirits, to take away the Horn smell and make it safe to drink from. But, IMO, that still leaves the Pores of the inner Horn open to infiltration and possible contamination. Many Folks do it anyway.

I always treat the inside and outside with Beeswax. After it has been inscrbed with Runes or carved, and it is thoroughly dried I warm it, and
treat it, on the inside and outside. There are detailed instructions given on some websites and in a few books. I think one of K.Gundersons books on "Teutonic Religion" has them.
The Outside requires much polishing to achieve a good shiny finish.
Good Beeswax will leave the Horn with a slight Honey odor. I like it...
    But, to each his own.
    Have Fun!

    Oh, I don't go to Renn-Faires much. I haven't for years.
I do well to attend the Althings of the Groups I am active with. I try to get to a Folk Moot or Althing every couple of years.
I am Asatru. I run a Kindred. I am accepted as Clergy. So, I have obligations.
    We all do, don't we?

    Heilsa!
Maybe you could write a poem based on some deep & holy inspiation you've felt about Odhinn or take something from the Havamal as suggested.
But if you find it too long to write you could use a WendRune-Bind Rune to encapsualate each fraze or as many as you can fit to convey all you want to.
That would be quiet some horn if you really nailed it energetically.

I've always wanted to make a mouth peice linked by a chain to the butt peice of a drinking horn so I could use it as a sounding horn as well .
    What do you thinf that?

    Wassail Horns..........

Here's a website where they offer them, already made up, at not too bad a price. I've never bought from them, so I can't vouch for their services.
Looks like they have some good offerings, for the money.

    It's at:

    http://www.warhorse.com/wassail.html

They look to be a SCA/Reenactment group.
    Good Luck. Have Fun.

    Sealing inside the horn

I use a non-toxic hypoallergenic (food grade) shellac. First I sterilize with Polydent tablets (after I sand down as much as I can reach) and let dry completely. Then coat with shellac, pour out, let dry, repeat.

Just wanted to throw this out there but if a horn is sterilized with bleach and then strong alcohol (which kills germs) and is then used for consuming strong alcohol, wouldn't it continually kill germs?

Yes, I'm of the opinion that we're too afraid of the micro-organisms living around -and in- us. An example form my college Biology teacher- Our mothers, or grandmothers, used to use cloth diapers which were then rinsed in the toilet and subsequently washed. With this handling of feces on a daily basis, according to current fears these hardworking women should have been almost constantly ill. But studies show that the American population has more aches and ills now with our "miracle" medicine than were reported at the turn of the twentieth century.
Exposure to small amounts of bacteria makes our bodies stronger. That's the theory behind vaccines. Now if the drug companies would stop putting mercury in the vaccines and using germs as a marketing tool, we might find a little peace of mind.

Out of curiosity, where do you get your shellac from?

to carve on the horn its name

Ther first Name must be "inspiration."
This would relate to the state of consciousness you are going to invoke
from the horn you are going to drink from.
Written as ingwaz, sowelo, petro, isa, raidho, ansaz, tirwaz, isa, oss, nauthiz.
If you understand the runes they are self explanitory.

I don't have a horn personally, don't snigger. But if I was to suggest something or etch on my own, it would probably be from the Hávamál, a certain line which I can relate to.
Hope you find the phrase that suits you and your ancestors.
