Shouldn't we be using the Runic Era year when dealing with Runic, well, birth Runes?

Using the Runic Era (year CE + 250), my rune is Ansuz. Using the year CE, it's Kenaz. I'm going with Ansuz because it's done by the Runic year. However, I've never heard of "birth Runes" before, and would just as soon stick to the signs of the Zodiac. I read the description for my sign (Aquarius) on an astrology site, and it fit me basically to a T, so I see no reason to deviate from that.

    Interesting, though. Thanks for sharing.

Using the Common Era date, I get Ansuz: 4+10+1988=2002, 2+0+0+2= 4
Using the Runic Era date I get Isa: 4+10+2238=2252, 2+2+5+2=11

I choose to go with Ansuz, despite being calculated by CE, as it represents me in my eternal stride for knowledge and wisdom much better. On the other hand, Isa represents my calm, rational approach to many things; that is sometimes over-rational.

Kenaz (Kauno) based upon Runic era dating.

    Meaning
Heat, light, enlightenment. Possibly mistaken: burning. an opening, ulcer or injury and thus mental anguish.

    Characteristics
Kauno's main significance is related to fire, light, warmth, enlightenment and knowledge. It sheds light on the path, dispels the dark shadows of ignorance, and helps us to see with true discernment. It suggests that understanding must lead to action, and light in the darkness implies spiritual illumination. Kauno also represents the natural warmth and companionship of the home fire and thus, good health.

I am confused on the whole math thing.
If I use Runic era, I get Algiz based on this
    14+4+2238=2256
    2+2+5+6=15
If I use CE, I get, which is where I am confused on how to make the sum smaller than 25. Ideas?
    14+4+1971=1989
    1+9+8+9=27

    Rune Mark

Well... that was fun! According to the method of calculation, my birthrune becomes the the tenth Rune "Nauthiz". And from the interpretation of the Rune Poem, verse 10 the following is divined:

Hardship falls heavy on the heart
Yet, it can be a blessing
If its lessons can be learned

    And so, the meaning is:

    Conciousness is the Necessity
and from Nietzsche, "that which does not destroy me makes me stronger".

By using the Rune Era instead of the regular CE Era one estimates a different birth rune. This all is obtained by using the regular Futhark variant.
If you use the Uthark, then again one will get a completly different birth rune.
I am of the opinion that all runes contains different aspects of your Self since they have several meaning which can be applied to your development throughout your life/journey.

    Other Names/Spellings: Thuith, Thurisa, Thurisar,
    Thorunisaz, Thyth

    Pronunciation: Thoor-ee-sawz

    Translation:
Giant, monster, devil. A thorn. The god Thor, or his hammer Mjöllnir.

    Characteristics:
Threats from persons of power or position. Resist temptations which offer reward through dishonesty or trickery. Heed the omen of dishonour or physical harm.

The energy of Thurisaz can be used for good or for chaos. It represents the forces of the human psyche, including anger and lust. The thorn is a symbolic weapon. It can pierce, stab or tear. But it can also be protective, like a thorny hedge. Thurisaz may also signify a stroke of luck, but is more often a warning that your luck is running out.

    How to Interpret "Thurisaz"

Thurisaz is the sacrifice that one must make in order to make progress in life. It is the very essence of discipline. This rune references the pain that must be endured for the reward that lies at its end. It may be likened to a long period of study that lies before the start of a satisfying career. A painful lesson learned. Monetary hardship, a temporary separation, or anything that requires a personal sacrifice to "get through" to the other side of the situation.

Thursiaz represents harsh outside forces which stand in opposition -- particularly natural forces or forces on a larger scale.

On the positive side, Thurisaz also signifies discipline and the necessity of change: Things that are happening are meant to happen. They are part of the grand cycle of life and nature. Those things that we are forced to endure will pave the way for good things in the future.

    Nauthiz.

"Need and want are not the same thing - this rune encourages us to remember that fact. Only when we are fighting for our very survival are we likely to understand the things we truly need."

    The description do fit me
