    How Do You Feel About Jesus's Ethnicity?

    I have been reading the recent discussions on Christianity and I believe it is an accepted fact that Jesus was non-Germanic, no matter what race he belonged to.

    My question is addressed to Christians, so please do not derail my thread in the wrong direction if you are not a Christian. How do you feel about Jesus's ethnicity, do you believe it is relevant or not?

    Hmm, my view is Jesus's ethnicity is part of the human side. But what interests more is the divine side. Because Jesus as human died, he was imperfect, he was temped to sin. But the godly side was a different matter. God hasn't an ethnicity. God existed before ethnicities and nations were created. He created them. And Jesus didn't die for the sins of his ethnicity only. He died for the sins of all mortals, so his ethnicity was irrelevant then.

    Ethnicly Jesus was a Jew, though I don't think he was Jewish as we now perceive it. Contemporary Jews are primarily the descendents of an urban population that evolved in the ghettoes of Eastern Europe. Jesus was from a community of rural agarian Jews. It's also quite likely that the overwhelming descendents of 1st century AD Jews are not Jewish by religion or ethnic identity in the 21st century AD, most 21st century Jews being descendent from very small groups of Jews, e.g the Ashkenazim communities of Eastern Europe descent from approximately 25,000 Jews who fled to Poland during the Black Plague.

    What race was Jesus? Until the recent pc trend to portray him as a "person of color" he has always from the earliest times been portray as a Europid.

    Jesus specifically limited his ministry to his place and time and people, and then specifically sent some other guys out to take the message "to the ends of the earth". If there's anything of the divine going on with Jesus, it's for everybody. To reject his teaching "because he was a Jew" is to seriously miss the whole point of it.

    The fact is no one really knows what Jesus looked liked. We have the ever popular artist conception & feature film images engraved in our brains.

    The Jews are considered to be "God's" chosen children, so it seems to me that his son would be Jewish

    Jesus is a derivative of the Hebrew name יֵשׁוּעַ "Yeshua", related to "Joshua". Iesus is twice removed from this Hebrew name; likely, he would have been called Jesus only by the Greek tradesmen and merchants of his home, which was near the major cultural hub of Caesarea.

    I didn't realise his ethnicity was really up for debate. While it is possible for there to have been Greeks or Romans in his background, ultimately "Roman" doesn't so much constitute a defined biological entity but a cultural structure, and even the Roman Legionnaire theory does not discount the possibility of his having a Hebrew father, though to serve in the Legions he would likely have been a Graeco-Hebrew rather than a Judaean.

    All in all, his actual ethnicity means very little; it is not the man but the prophet who is of significance. It is not the Galilean, in short, who has bearing on us, but the other aspect of Jesus: so-called Christ, be that aspect mythical or a reality. His ideas are certainly Semitic in nature, though, and the religion of his followers a brother of Mohammedanism and Judaism, though often clothed in the costume of Classical Antiquity. I think even Christians would agree that it is what the Son of God preached to man that has bearing on his contemporary followers, because this is the eternal core and goal of Christianity as a creed; his physical, temporal, transient being is important insofar as the fact that he was human is important to the act of sacrifice he performed, but the specific biological past of the Son of Man is not of any significance to the spiritual reality of the Son of God.

    A relevant passage.

    Revelation 3:7-12 (King James Version)

    7And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

    8I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

    9Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

    10Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

    11Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

    12Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
