Swedes More Positive to Refugees: Report

Swedes more positive to refugees: report

Opposition among Swedes to accepting refugees into the country has declined, a new report shows.

"The trend is that opposition to refugees is in decline," said professor in political science Marie Demker to the news agency TT.

A new survey, to be published by the SOM institute at Gothenburg University in a couple of weeks, shows that the proportion of Swedes that think it is a good idea to accept fewer refugees has declined from 49 percent to 45 percent over the past year.

Marie Demker, who is responsible for the survey, says that the figures collated through the years indicate a gradual, steady decline.

"We had a significantly greater opposition in the beginning of the 1990s."

She says that the results of the new survey can be considered somewhat unexpected considering the advance of a party such as the far-right Sweden Democrats, which advocates tighter restrictions.

The survey also indicates that factors such as education, age and place of residence also affect attitudes towards refugees.

For example 57 percent of those who lack high school (gymnasium) or university education consider it a good idea to accept fewer refugees. Among those with higher education only 28 percent agree with the statement.

"Education is the single strongest explanatory factor to attitudes regarding the acceptance of refugees," Marie Demker said.

The full report from the SOM institute will be published on July 7th.

The survey involved 6,000 people interviewed during the autumn of 2008.

The Swedish majority have never been positive to refugees!
If my memory serves me right there's usually about 20-25% who says that they are positive to refugees.

Marie Demker's work has always been heavily biased towards a multicultural society. She started out as a journalist on the far left (can't remember if it was she or her husband that used to be a member of the revolutionary Marxist-Leninist party KPMLr) and then began studying political science.

Demker appears in Swedish media now and then, and is an expert in never answering a straight question without twisting the words in a way that will deceive the audience. For example she uses different terms like refugee or immigrant, depending on the situation, in a way that makes it necessary to listen very carefully to figure out what she's actually saying.
In her report about the SOM-survey she sometimes adds the answers for two groups, like "Approve" and "Strongly approve", and sometimes she don't. All depending on what she's trying to make the readers believe.

Furthermore, it's typical for Demker to announce the result of her report a week or two before releasing the report it self. In that way she's not only able to pick the parts of this years survey that suits her the best, allowing her to steer the debate in a direction that fits her agenda before people can get their hands on the report and draw their own conclusions. But it also give her some influence over which headlines newspapers will use when they write about her report. And it's often the headlines that stick in the readers minds.

Marie Demker is not a scientist but a professional propagandist, and a despicable excuse for a human being.
