German MPs Demand Voting Rights for Children

More than 40 German deputies on Tuesday proposed that the voting age be lowered to birth to give children a say in the country’s political future, the parliamentary press service said.

“At the moment some 14 million Germans are denied the right to vote, purely because of their age,” the 46 members of parliament said in a discussion document tabled in the legislature.

They proposed that parents be allowed to vote for their offspring, until such time that the children felt they were ready to cast ballots themselves. Markus Loening, a member of the Free Democrats (FDP), had argued in January that the time had come to give more importance to children’s place in society at a time when Germany is concerned about its aging population and low birthrate. The MPs cited “numerous studies” which they said have found that it is in the public interest that children and adolescents be allowed to exercise political rights.

The voting age in Germany was lowered in the 1970s from 21 to 18 years. It is enshrined in the constitution but the deputies said this was “not irrevocable” and did not pose an unsurmountable obstacle to their proposal.

Two, since I can vote too.

But I don't find this a good idea. Imagine how many liberal, brainwashed parents are around. To use their children's votes would be abuse. The youth is the future, but the youth's right to vote is taken from birth by parents who vote for crap parties. I think the children should decide when they grow up, if they want to vote for a crap party, they will vote for it, but if they don't, they will at least exercise their voting the way they want, without having a history of voting crap because of the parents.

But don't they tend to have less childeren. It only becomes dangerous when dual citizenship and other things like that are alowed. In short when people with an very different ethnic background are given citzenship easly (lets say alow Turks in Germany to have dual-citizenship).

However Filip de Man, a Flemish MP is in favor of such a policy because it would reward those Flemish that help keep the Flemish nation to stay healthy demographicaly speaking. But like I said certain measuers should be taken to prevent that it would lead in to the wrong direction. And I fear Germany wouldn't be ripe for such a policy.

Yeah, this seems similar to a proposal promoted by Australian nationalist Andrew Fraser for 'family voting'

On the one hand, conservatives tend to have more children than liberals (in Germanic society), but on the other immigrants tend to have more children than anyone. In the US, I am against such a thing due to the large number of hispanic immigrants and the large size of their families, for Germany I do not know enough to say.

Indeed, such proposals would better work in relative ethnic homogenous socities with strict and though immigration laws then in you're average present day Western country.

And for large families. I can't tell for Germany, but in the Netherlands the averge amount of childeren for Germanic is low. We only population wise because of immigrationm and large immigrant families.

A German woman has on average 1-2 children if any. A Turkish woman has 4-5. That's what statistics said last time I was aware. So obviously, it would be more pro-immigrant than anything. And now the Turkish immigrants also want dual citizenship so they can vote.

Germany -- Also a Little Crazy?

--- so it isn't just England then ?!!

Germany plans to give vote to babies

    Telegraph 10/07/2008

Dozens of German politicians have tabled a new law to extend voting rights to babies, toddlers, children and teenagers.
The bill, which has won the cross-party backing of some heavyweight German politicians, would wipe away decades of "exclusion" and "discrimination" against minors, according to its supporters.

Currently the voting threshold in Germany is 18, with an exception in some states, where 16-year-olds are allowed to cast a ballot.

But that does not go far enough for the new law's backers, who want to ensure voting rights from cradle to grave. If the bill gets adopted, babies will have the same powers to voice their opinion on government handling of macro-economic performance in a global downturn enjoyed by their parents.

Toddlers will be able to take a stand on issues such as whether German armed forces should be deployed abroad.

According to the head of the liberal Free Democratic Party * traditional coalition partner of Chancellor Merkel's CDU party * the constitutional change would enfranchise 14 million people.

"Unfortunately in Germany, 17 per cent of the population, namely the children and adolescent, are excluded from political decision making," said FDP chief Dirk Niebel.

"This is a situation we cannot accept any longer. We generally have to pay more attention to their interests." The law is proposed as part of a review of voting rights which its champions hope will be in force for the federal elections in Germany next year.

"The Constitutional Court has ruled that election regulations have to be reformed anyway, so we should take advantage of the occasion to enforce children's right to vote," he said.......

History is not his side however, with a similar motion failing to win parliamentary approval in 2005.

It is a good idea in philosophy. People who are 2 years old have much more of an interest in how the country will be governed that those who are 62 or 72 or 82.

It is a good idea in practice. It gives patriots [who have more children than leftists nihilists] more voting power to elect patriotic parties. The foreigners who have large number of babies still hold foreign citizenship usually and so they don't vote.
