'Sacrifices'. That makes it sound like the British Armed Forces have been having a beneficial and worthwhile effect on the world during the last century, or so.Yesterday the military veterans charity published an open letter, saying: "The poppy is the symbol of sacrifices made by British armed forces and it has been paid for with blood and valour.
In reality, they haven't fought a just war since Napoleonic times.
Valour. What is so valiant about cowering behind the lace curtains every time the postman comes calling, in fear of him delivering conscription papers?
Blood. In the Second World War, fewer than 1 in 5 members of the British army ever fired a shot in anger! Not a single shot.
(Unfortunately I have forgotten the source from which I gleaned this information, but I'm pretty sure it was either a recent book written by Max Hastings, or Berlin; the Downfall 1945 by Antony Beevor. I was reading both concurrently)
I haven't bought a poppy for many years. I don't want a single penny of mine to go to keeping such pompous, conceited old buffoons in nappies and hot tea.
