    Top 30 Folk Viking Metal

I found these two videos looking for something else.

What is your view? I've to confess I'm not so familiar with this metal scene. If you made your own top 30, how different would it be from this one?

Not a bad list, though its debatable whether certain bands fit in the certain a genre, such as Wintersun which I wouldn't call viking- neither folk-metal, more like melodic-speed-extreme/death metal ().
I'm not that strict about making a list because there are a lot of bands in the genre that I like very much, however, I would definitely change the ranks in the list.

The list isnt bad, but very personal. And there are some important bands missing, such as Storm and Isengard, Troll and Kampfar. Bathory certainly deserves a better rank, also Windir.

In my personal list some bands I'd throw out, Turisas f.e.
Indisputable viking metal, but also Svartsot would not be mentioned, I found their album really annoying. And it's death metal based, beside Amon Amarth there is no band of viking death metal I really like.

Then I thought Denmark is underrepresented, Angantyr, Grívf, Zahrim, newer bands Vardlokkur, Heidra, Blodtru, Mzoraxc, Fjorsvartnir... depending of how far one wants to take the general folk aspect there would be lot more. From Sweden Mörker, LIK, Forgotten Woods, Lönndom, from Norway Elite, SorgSvart, Khold. Just what comes to my mind without thinking.

I couldnt limit my list to only 30 I think, there is so much good stuff out there.

Personally I thought the top places on the list where the worst, but there were a lot of good bands further down the list.

One of my favorite bands that has not been mentioned is Nebelhorn, In my humble opinion one of the best.

It's not a bad list, but it's not how I would've done it.

First of all, I would not have included Amon Amarth. Don't get me wrong, they're awesome, one of my favorites (I even saw them in concert), but they're not viking metal and they're definately not folk metal. They're melodic death metal with viking themed lyrics (so says everyone, including the band themselves).

And another thing. Manegarm #1? They're good, but they're not that good. My #1 choice would probably be Ensiferum.

Oh, and another thing. No mention of Enslaved? Who's making this list anyway???

They actually call their music "Heroic Folk Metal", and some call their music "Battle Metal". But that, along with them being from Finland, is beside the point.

Also, this excerpt is from an article I read which raised a similar question...

And I just find that completely ridiculous because in that time the modern-day borders weren't there and Sweden as we know it was just a country scattered out into small, tiny groups and anyone coming from the the southern part of Sweden was just as much from another country as someone from the north. They all spoke the same language, so there was definitely a connection between them, but they didn't have a common cultural identity. The Vikings created these songs that could tell the rest of the world what they were doing and where they went. For all that time in Finland, no one could write, so Finnish literary history is 'born' in the early 17th Century. So it's also a matter of who can actually write down the most, and whether sources are available or not. All the great leaders wanted their chronicles to be in favour of them, to look good for the people who came after them. And many see that as the absolute truth, which is misguided.

    #5 - Mithotyn
    #4 - Nachtfalke
    #3 - Falkenbach
    #2 - Heimdalls Wacht
    #1 - Forefather

I took the freedom and counted bands such as Heimdalls Wacht, Nachtfalke, Windir, Morrigan and Sturmkaiser even though all are almost BM. They would also be included in a BM list, I consider them intermediate.

I did not count those obviously BM such as Aaskereia. I also did not count Amon Amarth or Unleashed, neither did I count Wintersun. Turisas and Alestorm weren't included either, they are essentially Power Metal.

Nordglanz and Leichenzug were also not counted even though they're arguably within the genre.
-In kalte Schatten versunken...

(Heimdalls Wacht, In kalte Schatten versunken, stanzas 4-6)
