Are there midsummer festivals and whatnot? What takes place? What are the customs? Could be fun.

    Southern Hemisphere - Winter Solstice

In the Southern Hemisphere June 21 is our Winter Solstice or Mid-Winter.

Also my birthday so you know what I will be celebrating.

Don't wish me a happy birthday - just buy me something!

In the forest *hick* with a few mates *hick*. Of course a religious *hick* aspect before we pass into *hick* drinking and burst into *hick* song.

I will make a huge fire by the sea in northern Norway, there is alot of driftwood. In Norway and Denmark the christians took the tradition and called it "St. Hans".

The day is also called Jonsok, which means "John's wake"
In parts of Norway a custom of arranging mock marriages, both between adults and between children, is still kept alive. The wedding was meant to symbolize the blossoming of new life. Such weddings are known to have taken place in the 1800s, but the custom is believed to be older.

I usually celebrate it by myself. Each year I make 3 wooden wheels that I carry up on a hill that is special to me and when the sunset starts on Solstice day I lit each of them and roll them down the hill, one by one. The wheels' ride down the hill symbolize the descent of the Sun and the hope for its return at Julenzeit.

No, dear Roddy --- that is how you celebrate the Festival of Baldur's Death, the Summer Solstice ... but not how you celebrate Midsummer. Your approach is way too (scuse the pun) sober.

I oft enough run up the mountain myself to participate in our tradition of "Solstice Fires" ... but I don't forget about the social aspect that is also involved, which makes it more than just a religious folk tradition - but that which makes it a huge fete.

Much like the Julpunsch is part of Yule celebrations and the first glass of Saurer Apfel is as much part of the Mayday Celebrations as Maypole skipping. A huge celebration of Blot is not fully a complete festival without the later ensuing Symble.

It's the longest day of the year, which means you have less time to get your beers finished before the sun rises, means you have to get moving.

I usually celebrate most festivals with my local Hearth, or with a group of fellow Celtic Recons, or travel to a somewhat neighboring Hearth about two hours away. I will probably do the same for Mid-summer this year.
Midsummer is a little unique for me, since we don't really have it in Druidry/Celtic Paganism.

Well it seems that ForestSpirit, the thread starter considers the two as one, so I answered her question. Btw, stop picking on me.
