Vienna Has the Best Standard of Living in World

Vienna offers the best quality of life of any city in the world, according to consulting firm Mercer's influential annual survey.

It ends Zurich's seven year reign as the highest ranked city.

Vienna moved up to first from its tied number two spot with Geneva last year ending Zurich's seven year reign at the head of the list and holding off Geneva which slipped to third in this year's report.

Vienna's political stability and low risk of terror attacks over the last ten years have steadily increased Vienna's ranking in the Mercer survey, which covers 215 cities and is conducted to help governments and major companies place employees on international assignments.

The current financial crisis is thought to have had an effect on this years rankings. Mercer said in its report summary: "The quality of living in many regions last year has been affected as demonstrated by serious political turmoil, increasing unrest and instability, health and climatic concerns.

"The global financial crisis has intensified in 2008, becoming an area of increasing international concern. The effects of various rescue plans being implemented are yet to be known."

Eight years after the EU sanctions placed against Austria, the country is now ranked as a country with a stable democracy with a fully functioning and fair legal system.

Of course it has the highest standard of living. It's because we Austrians are the best.

Well - the sad truth is: So, its infrastructure is excellent. So, it is one of the safest cities for outside threat. So it is to the outsider the epitome of what a modern city should look like.

Ah, here comes the catchphrase - what a modern city should look like. What the article fails to mention is that it is a hotspot for crime, and especially ethnic crime. Over half of pupils in Vienna are now foreign-descended, with this reaching the highest levels in the two comprehensive-schools in Hernals, who have a foreigner level of 93.2%!!!

For most western cities, it is perhaps one of the cities that is the least hellhole. However, it still suffers from all the same problems, and we Austrians have long considered it a bit of a Sorgenkind.

All that the survey/article shows is that Vienna has all the right things in place to make it a successful city - however to make it unproblematic, many other things would happen. But at least it's good to know that we've got the potential in our capital.

I like the city, it has quite a few upsides: well-developed infrastructure (particularly the subway and tramway systems), good quality and easy accessible services, low pollution (one of the greenest cities in the world), polite people, high cultural value and a wide variety of activities and recreational offers. Museums, exhibitions, theaters, opera, music, stage shows, fashion, amusement parks, gyms, swimming pools and spas are among the many options to pick from. There is a forest rope park and a summer oasis which feels just like a sea beach. There is even a floating/REST/sensory deprivation tank for those who want to pause the hectic, saturated world and enter a state of deep mental and physical relaxation. So even while being in the city, it doesn't need to feel like it. Needless to say, it's pretty hard to get bored, and if one wants to take a break from the urban vibe, there is plenty of green space as well as picnic sites. Imperial parks and gardens enrich the cityscape as well as the outskirts. But especially particular to Vienna is the coffee house culture, a tradition like no other city in the world which is considered the epitome of a good quality of life in all of Europe. Another well-known and traditional Viennese feature are the traditional pastry shops, bakeries and confectioneries which offer some of the best cookies and cakes.

Vienna is also experiencing the trend of greening vertical surfaces with plants. The Hundertwasserhaus, the greenest apartment complex in central Vienna, the Hundertwasser Village across the street with a shop and cafe, and the Kunst Haus Wien, the Hundertwasser Museum, are all famous for this purpose. Both the rooftops and walls of these three buildings are greened with trees, shrubbery and flowers in surprising, bright colors. Viennese water is of particularly high quality, collected from the mountain springs in the Styrian/Lower Austrian Alps.

Unfortunately the crime rates have gone up, what is typical for a modern, multicultural city. Being a big tourist attraction the main points like Stephansplatz are heavens for pocket thieves. Also regarding safety, there is a little too much surveillance. It gives one a "Big Brother is watching you" feeling. There are cameras placed every few meters, on the Jews' Street there are police on the watch all day long, and I heard they even want to place some camera surveillance in public toilets. Also, politically speaking, Vienna is unfortunately quite red (socialist).

You obviously haven't been to Dundee in the past year or so, then. It makes Vienna or any other "moderately surveilled" cities look like nothing. I was really shocked last time I visited down there.

They literally have every corner covered on CCTV. Going from West Marketgait to the Wellgate Center (400-500 yards or so), there are 12 that I can think of off the top of my head. And that's just the dead obvious ones...

And that's the least dangerous area of that city, A single street in Hilltown tends to have more cameras than all of Paisley put together, and that's got to mean something.

I heard they even want to place some camera surveillance in public toilets.
I seem to vaguely recall that some subway station toilets already have them, anyhow. Could be mistaken though, or that could just be a few central ones.

I haven't used one recently but I'm guessing it's a step against drug users, who hide in public toilets to have a bit of a moment.

Cams in public toilets.. big brother is watching you urinate.

Next time you use one of those WCs, put gum over the lens before you drop your pants.. maybe you can get done before the stormtroopers break in on you.

Yeah, I'm actually kind of surprised that Vienna tops the list. It seemed to me that large swaths of this once grand empire city had decayed into immigrant urban wastelands when I visited. The streets were rather desolate and many buildings were covered in graffiti. I figured real Austrians had just abandoned these parts to the savages. The Ringstraße area, Belvedere Palace, etc., were really nice and inspiring though.

My favorite city in Europe by far is Munich. It's so clean, and I love the way Bavarians still honor their folk traditions (which doesn't seem to be so much the case elsewhere in Germany). The Rathaus-Glockenspiel is truly a sight to behold, and the world-historical significance of Marienplatz is colossal.

I always say, if ya want something done right, get a Bavarian to do it. And, no, I'm not just saying that because half my blood is Bavarian.

Something to consider is that Vienna is a popular tourist attraction, so you'll see foreigners everywhere. I am seeing many from Asian countries. But there are many Muslim immigrants as well, although most concentrate into the outskirt areas.

Wien-Favoriten: 15,000 working-class Austrians who go to a football game, 250,000 foreigners who rule the rest of the district.

It looks like our city has dropped down on the list. I've never been to Vancouver, so I can't compare the two cities.

Vienna has dropped from second to third place in a ranking of the most liveable cities in the world.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) announced today (Tues) it considered the Canadian city of Vancouver – which hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics – as the best place to live on the planet for a fifth year in a row.

Vienna, which was listed second-best last year, swapped places with the Australian city of Melbourne in the new ranking. The Canadian cities of Toronto and Calgary came fourth and fifth.

Helsinki, the capital of Finland, was the second-best European city in sixth. Sydney reached seventh place ahead of Perth and Adelaide, two other Australian cities. Osaka, Japan, was the top Asian city in 12th. Harare in Zimbabwe is the least pleasant place to live in the world today, according to the EIU.
    The rest here.
    THINK! It's not illegal yet.
