Colin Jordan, Leader of the British Movement Dies Aged 85

    Colin Jordan

Colin Jordan, who has died aged 85, occupied a niche at the extremity of British political life in the 1960s as founder of the National Socialist Movement and later as leader of the British Movement, propounding views to the Right of the National Front.

Colin Jordan gives the Nazi salute at a by-election meeting at Leyton, east London, in 1965, as Patrick Gordon Walker watches from the platform

Attracting opprobrium from almost every quarter – "viperous, hysterical" was one typical estimation, while the Labour cabinet minister Denis Healey reckoned him "a repulsive brute" – Jordan cut an almost comic figure in many people's eyes, strutting at far-Right rallies in uniform and regalia redolent of Hitler's defeated Third Reich. One tabloid labelled him Britain's most notorious Nazi.

Advocating the return of all Jews to Israel (or, when Israel was full, Madagascar) and the repatriation of all non-white immigrants, Jordan was portrayed as the godfather of British fascism. In 1962 he was jailed for inciting a riot in Trafalgar Square, and imprisoned again later the same year after being convicted of organising a neo-Nazi paramilitary group called Spearhead. His extreme views were subsidised by his one-time wife, Françoise Dior, of the French perfume and fashion empire and herself a committed fascist.

During the 1960s Jordan regularly contested parliamentary elections, invariably losing his deposit. In 1965 he led a group of about 100 fascist demonstrators at a noisy by-election meeting at Leyton, east London. Denis Healey, then Harold Wilson's Defence Secretary, who spoke in support of the Labour candidate Patrick Gordon Walker (who had lost his seat at Smethwick in the general election over immigration), scuffled with Jordan as he invaded the platform to harangue the crowd. Healey landed a heavy punch, knocking Jordan off the stage and sending him crashing into a watching journalist, breaking the reporter's spectacles.

Two years later Jordan was jailed for 18 months for distributing a racist leaflet called The Coloured Invasion which attacked black and Asian immigrants. But his image suffered a severe knock in 1975 when he was fined for stealing three pairs of red women's knickers from a Tesco store in Leamington Spa. Jordan claimed that the knickers were for his 89-year-old mother; that he had stuffed them in his trouser pockets because it was "embarrassing" carrying them round the shop; and that he was the victim of a Jewish plot. At about the same time he handed over the leadership of the British Movement to a Liverpool milkman, Michael McLaughlin.

John Colin Campbell Jordan was born on June 19 1923 in Birmingham, the son of a postman. On leaving Warwick School in 1942, he served in the Royal Army Educational Corps for the remainder of the Second World War and on demobilisation went up to Sidney Sussex, Cambridge, where he took a second in History. In 1949 he became a mathematics teacher at Stoke secondary modern school in Coventry, and in the early 1950s inherited a house in Notting Hill, west London, from Arnold Leese, who had led the Imperial Fascist League in the 1930s, and who had influenced Jordan during his time at Cambridge.

Using this house as a base, Jordan founded the White Defence League in 1956, four years later merging it with the National Labour Party to form the British National Party, subsequently the National Socialist Movement. At an international conference in the Cotswolds in the summer of 1962, Jordan and George Lincoln Rockwell, leader of the American Nazi Party, established the World Union of National Socialists and declared Jordan its "World Führer".
Jordan relinquished control of the British Movement in the 1970s, and retired to a farmhouse in North Yorkshire. He never publicly repudiated his political views, however, and in 1991 his home was raided by police searching for racist literature. Jordan spotted that the search warrant was out of date and sued the police, who blamed a clerical error. He accepted an out-of-court settlement of £10,000.

In 1998 he bought a former croft at the remote village of Daibaig in the Scottish Highlands, and launched a campaign against plans to build a multi-faith centre there. Despite a court order in 2001 banning him from political activity, a Scottish newspaper found evidence that he continued to advise far-Right groups in Europe to promote neo-Nazism.
Colin Jordan, who died on April 9, married Françoise Dior in 1963. The marriage was dissolved four years later.

Colin Jordan: Leading figure in British fascism

Colin Jordan: Leading figure in British fascism

    Tuesday, 28 April 2009

Colin Jordan, who has been described as the grandfather of post-war National Socialism in Britain, was an ardent admirer of Hitler who for decades carried the flag for Nazism. Despite his long devotion to the cause, few rallied to his standard. His decades of activism none the less made him a prominent figure in the ultra-right undergrowth which included the National Front, British National Party and a myriad of other groups.

Jordan was a member of many of these and an opponent of many more, since the far-right proved at least as vehemently schismatic as the left, and has been riven with often bitter splits over personalities, policies and tactics. Jordan was at the heart of one such rift when he broke with one-time associate John Tyndall over what they said were policy differences. The widespread belief, however, was that the real reason was that Jordan married the jailed Tyndall's ex-fiancée.

She was Françoise Dior, an eccentric niece of the famous designer Christian Dior. She was as fervently Nazi as Jordan: as part of their marriage ceremony they cut their fingers and mingled their blood over a copy of Mein Kampf. Although she said she wanted to "give birth to a little Nazi", they had no children, and after a few years of marriage she ran off with a teenager. At one point she was charged with arson attacks on synagogues.

The Jordan-Tyndall fall-out meant that two of the major figures in the ultra-right camp were permanently estranged from each other. Both struggled unsuccessfully to make inroads beyond the most extreme fringes, and never managed to establish any significant electoral foothold.

Jordan was involved with an entire lexicon of micro-groups, ranging from the League of Empire Loyalists to the British Movement, and from the National Socialist Movement to the White Defence League. He also formed attachments with neo-Nazi elements on the continent and in the US. One of his groups, Spearhead, was a paramilitary outfit which in the early 1960s landed him in prison for one of his spells behind bars. He had been observed taking part in military manoeuvres by police, who seized Nazi flags and portraits, pistols, knives, helmets and other paraphernalia. On one container of chemicals the words "weed-killer" had been replaced with "Jew-killer".

Jordan and several others were sent to jail. He was locked up again in 1965 under strengthened race-relations laws after he issued a pamphlet, The Coloured Invasion, in which he railed against blacks, Asians and immigration. He made many court appearances following rallies and protests, and for the dissemination of literature said to incite racist hatred. At one point the cabinet discussed banning one of his demonstrations, with deputy prime minister Rab Butler saying the government "must do something", but it was allowed to go ahead.

The son of a postman, Jordan was educated at Warwick School and at Cambridge, where he took a history degree. His mentor was Arnold Leese, a right-winger who before the war had quarrelled with Sir Oswald Mosley, whom he denounced as "kosher fascist". Later on Mosley was to jeer at Jordan and similar figures as "pygmies posing in the jackboots of dead giants".

While at Cambridge Jordan formed what he called a nationalist club. Later he taught mathematics at a secondary school, but lost the job because of his activism. In the years that followed he attacked immigration and "Jewish control" of politics, business and the media. In his scheme of things democracy was "a master method to deter people from any critical appraisal of the Jews". He declared: "Democracy is death".

Annoyed by such pronouncements Denis Healey, while Secretary of State for Defence, once punched him at a public meeting as Jordan and others sought to push the immigration issue during by-elections.

But Hitler – "this wondrous man" – was always Jordan's primary focus. He asserted that there was "no reliable evidence whatsoever" that six million perished in the Holocaust. His attachment went far beyond mere hero-worship, extending into the realms of spirituality. Discounting Jesus as "the counterfeit Christ of the Christians", Jordan described Hitler as "messiah" and "saviour", and as a seer and priest who brought a "message of salvation". In a 1989 essay he declared: "The crucifixion of his creed was by the spears of baleful war alone, devoid of higher sanction from any worthier creed. His was the spiritual victory." He went on to forecast Hitler's "resurrection" as "the spiritual conqueror of the future".

With few takers for such a vision, Jordan faded in his leadership role in the far-right underworld, though he continued to write books and pamphlets and at no point showed any sign of moderating his views. His credibility was further damaged by a court appearance on a charge of stealing three pairs of red knickers from Tesco's; he was found guilty and fined £50.

Jordan's writing landed him in court once again in 2001 when he faced charges of publishing material likely to stir up racial hatred. He brought into court a large box marked: "Freedom is in peril – defend it with all your might." The judge ruled that, at the age of 78, he was unfit to stand trial because of a serious heart condition.

Two years ago he issued an appeal for far-right unity and an end to the toxic in-fighting in which he had participated for so many years. "Whatever tiny chance remains at this very late hour for National Racial survival and revival depends on acting in unison", he wrote. The far right must, he said, "make the essential ascent from that pettiness of vision and spirit, with all its attendant squabbling, which has been the curse of British nationalism and the joy and benefit of our opponents." His partner Julianna Safrany survives him.

Thanks for this post marking the passing of Colin Jordan, prominent National Socialist and racialist patriot of England. I was unaware of his death until recently.
Though I did not agree with Mr. Jordan in some respects concerning personal liberty vs. totalitarianism, the "pan-Aryan" idea, I did find his writings on NS, race, etc. interesting and at times inspiring.
The fact that he was the target of such persecution from the UK government and Jewry in Britain shows what he said hit raw nerves despite his "fringe" status.
    Rest in Peace, sir.

To be honest I couldn't really care about the death of an extremist Neo-Nazi - their the kind of people who have been holding our movement back for decades.

Each to their own. One man's "extremist" is another's patriot.

I agree with that 100%, Beowulf!

Look at all the Marxists, Stalinists and Trotskyists etc.. that are in today’s UK government, and yet you don’t hear a murmur from anyone on the left about them “holding back the Socialist movement”.

I say be proud of your political allies (which Mr. Jordan most certainly was!) and save all your criticism for the type of vermin mentioned above

I feel that you are being rather unkind to Colin Jordan. He was fighting multiculturalism long before you were born.

He was a well educated (Cambridge) idealist who stuck to his principles and beliefs until his death.

Whichever way you dress it up, however you describe your political leanings, if you support Racialist Nationalism then you support the same politics as Colin Jordan. Neo-Nazism has not held back the Nationalist Movement; history, or rather the way our history is recorded, evaluated and taught is what has held Racialist Nationalism back. That combined with a hostile media. Anyone fighting multiculturalism raises the spectre of six million dead Jews in a majority of people's eyes. That is just a fact that we have to deal with. The only things that will stop that are time (the further we get away from WWII, the easier it will become) and the situation getting much, much worse in our respective countries. Most people are passive and weak. They moan about immigration but as long as things are generally ok in their lives, they will do nothing about it. It will only be when the white population are finally in the minority that the populace will start to sit up and listen to the Nationalist message. The trouble is that by then, it will be too little, too late.

So, raise a glass in the memory of Colin Jordan and all those before us who had the foresight and vision to actively stand up and fight against multiculturalism in the early days.
