    The Death Rune

    What is the Death Rune

This is a somewhat fanciful name sometimes given to the Eihwaz (Eoh) rune. Traditionally this rune, which links to the Yew tree, was sometimes used on tombstones and is thus associated with death. It is a rune of change and endings but one that is often protective also.

Novice rune-casters are often worried by the appearance of this rune in a reading, usually unnecessarily. While it can indicate an actual death (as can other runes) this is rare and like the Tarot "Death" card should mostly be read symbolically, indicating the death of a friendship, the end of a job, the shedding of old ways or bad habits etc.

    Yr

There are two different yew runes.

    Elder futhark http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eihwaz
    Younger futhark http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yr_rune

The death rune is Yr from younger futhark.
You can easily see that this is the life rune Algiz upside down.

Eiwaz is special to me; I have it tattooed on my left forearm in the guise of a wolfs-angel. I have Yews growing on my property, and I believe this rune is what Oðin whispered in Baldr´s ear on his pyre. It is the only rune in the Elder Futhark without a corresponding alphabetical value, and to me represents Yggdrasil and transformation.

Sad I am casting these Runes for year.

As an Afrikaner they are not strange to me at all, was taught to me by the old people, never thought of it as a sinful practice, because they advise and do not predict the future, I was never aware that a death Rune existed, the thought of that worries me a lot. Maggies tog! Dis nogal erg!
