I sometimes think that the type of journalists who write this kind of cynical and illogical rubbish should be made break stones for a living.

Just because "Flavanols" are shown to be healthy and chocolate contains Flavanols it does not directly follow that chocolate is healthy. Most Chocolate contains a lot of saturated fat which has been shown to be unhealthy.

A year or two ago the headline was "Pizza is healthy". It had been published in the scientific press that tomato puree had some demonstrably healthy properties. So, some journalist took it upon himself to proclaim that Pizza was a healthy food, ignoring completely all of its far from healthy ingredients, and the large portion sizes in which it is typically consumed.

Almost everything reported in the media is either misleading or outright wrong.

HAHA!! that statement you just made just proves and shows how full of shit these journalists are. Usually the people who you see becoming addicted to candy and big macs and letting themselves go are those lacking the mental resistance, problem solving and reasoning skills needed to keep limits on their diets.

Yeah, but even if it was true, it wouldn't mean people who are addicted to chocolate and eat it in high amounts are geniuses. Remember those articles about a glass of wine a day increasing chances of a better health? It's not the same if someone drinks a bottle of wine a day. It's all about moderation.

I find that large quantities of really good chocolate do boost my ability to concentrate on difficult reading or on such tasks as filling out tax forms.

Think about this: when was the last time you ever read anything in mainstream media or saw anything on TV that told you to go get an education, stay in shape, eat healthy, hold yourself to higher standards, hold others to higher standards, strive to be the best you can be etc.??

Every now and then you get a vague reference to eating healthy but they don't tell you what to actually eat. When they do it usually isn't healthy (like asking you to be a vegetarian which I already discussed elsewhere). Usually stay in school refers to high school i.e. re-education camp.

But I do notice regular attacks. Mainstream music encourages you to use drugs and drop out. The media tells us to feel good about ourselves even if we have accomplished nothing (seems that's what this article is- feel good about eating candy and big macs- you're a winner!).

I feel like I'm rebelling against the system when I actually obey the law, get educated, try to improve myself, try to improve my community, hold myself to a higher standard etc. That's the kind of stuff that keeps the enemy up at night "baaah! They are getting healthy. I must destroy!! Mislead them with some more lies that promiscuity, poor diet and drugs are good for them"

Chocolate is not like chocolate. Dark chocolate is in general 'healthier' than fe full-cream milk chocolate. It contains valuable trace minerals and even vitamines, the sugar is a good energy booster. In milk chocolate is much more saturated fat than in dark chocolate, which contains also a lot of unsaturated fat.

Actually, pizza is indeed very healthy, when it is fresh and not from a mass producer deep-frozen. Of course for a pizza with bolognaise this is less true than for a pizza with red paprika, champignons and ham.

And this of course doesnt mean that pizza should become your only sort of foot that you consume three times a day. Because when you eat three times a day over weeks the very same foot, it becomes unhealthy, even if your foot consists solely of paprikas. Like Todesengel said, it is all a question of meaningful/moderate dealing

"Healthier" is a relative term. Dark chocolate may well be healthier than Milk chocolate, in the same way that a plain donut is probably healthier than a cream donut; that doesn't make either food particularly healthy in absolute terms i.e they can't be compared health wise to fresh vegetables and fruits. If people need the trace elements from cocoa I'd be willing to bet they'd be a lot better off going straight to the source and eating the coco nut in it's original form the way nature intended; not an emulsified slab of freeze dried cocoa butter and sugar that's been sitting around in a warehouse for 4 months.

I have a problem when people apply the term "healthy" to something that is not in fact particularly healthy. In my opinion the only foods that can be classed as healthy are natural unprocessed whole foods, i.e fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, and nuts. As for the added sugar in chocolate being a good source of energy, it is anything but a good source of energy. Refined sugar is not a naturally occurring food, and consuming it by the half kilo along white flour products (such as pizza) is where I would put the blame for the epidemic of obesity, diabetes and tooth decay that has bedeviled western society for at least the last 50 years.

If there is one message people don't need to hear at the moment it's that chocolate and pizza are "healthy".
