How American are you? Are your ancestors recent migrants to the United States or distant?

As for myself I am part of a new arrival family.. I was born outside of the United States as well as my parents and there parents and so forth. We live in the United States now though and I do feel myself American. I follow what happens here and am concerned with the state of affairs of this nation.

My family has been here a long time now.

Other than a slice from my mother's side that showed up in the 1830s, all other branches date back to pre-independence.

My Swiss ancestors were among the early Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants. My Finn relatives are second generation. I am not sure about the Norwegian relatives.

Gosh, it seems like we just did one like this, not too long ago. Well. Both sides of my family have been here since the early 1600s. A few immigrants have married in over time (Irish, Scots, German), but mostly English.

4 3Xgreat-grandparents from Germany (and a great-great-grandmother), part of the 1840-1860 immigration wave from the Rhineland & Southwest Germany. A 4xgreat-grandfather born in Scotland, immigrated with his family sometime between 1785-1790. The rest of my ancestors were in America before 1776, some as far back as 1620. I'd estimate at least 1/2 my ancestors alive in 1700 were living in the British Colonies.

My maternal grandfather is Pennsylvania German (plus a small bit of Scottish), with ancestors in America since the 1600s. There is also talk of a Hessian soldier on his side who arrived around the time of the Revolution. My paternal grandfather's ancestors arrived quite early as well, somewhere in the 1700s, if I recall correctly, supposedly from Elsass. Some Swede got mixed in there along the way, though much later. Families of both grandmothers were relative newcomers.

Great Grandparents born in Europe and a Grandmother whose mother had been here for like 2 years at the time of her birth... We still have the farming immigrant's mentality about a lot of stuff.

On my dads side we've been here for quite a long time, since before independence. On my moms side we ran out of potatoes during the mid nineteenth century and came here to spread the evils of catholicism and organized labor.

Most of my ancestors seem to have arrived in America from England in the 1600's.
As noted elsewhere, my direct paternal line in America dates back to Jamestowne, 1622. My 12th great grandfather arrived on the "Guifte of God" from London in about July of 1622 at Jamestowne colony. Another ancestor served in the Virginia House of Burgesses in the 1600's, I believe. Many of my mother's ancestors had settled in the St. Mary's colony, Maryland from Yorkshire and Lancashire, England by the early 1700's evidently. Some were Irish that came over in the 1840's.
