    Sami Paganism?

Hello, I am new to the forum. I enjoy reading the discussions and arguments here, they can be very insightful and interesting!

Anyways, lately I have been interested in the Sami, and their ancient beliefs only because no one hears much about it and the subject seems to be so shadowed...

Does anyone have any resources or thoughts on the Sami and their pre-Christian religion or when they were converted? Did Scandinavians throughout history have much conflict with them? I know they had some injustice in Norway in the past...

Also, are there any others who share this heritage?

My Sami ancestors were from Finnish Lappland.

In norse times we collected taxes from the sami, but mostly we kept seperate. The taxes were paid in form of furs, ivory, etc. It was very profitable for the norse chieftains. Alot of norse religion have influences from sami culture, like Tjatse(Þjazi) is a sami namet. It was very unfortunate that norwegian priests wanted to rid the sami of their language and culture, but that has happened alot of places. America, inuits etc. Damn christians.

I beleive the Finnish word for sky is Tiwaz, which is interesting as Tyr was originally a sky god. There is also rumour that the Finns passed on the knowledge of runes to the Norse. That the Finns got runes from the Sami.
Has anyone heard the tale of Erik Blood Axe's wife being a Finn. That she was a sorceress and became mother of many Norse kings?

You're in good company there. With Jakob Grimm, actually:

    Chapter 8: Donar, Thunar, (Thorr)
    (Page 1)

The god who rules over clouds and rain, who makes himself known in the lightning's flash and the rolling thunder, whose bolt cleaves the sky and alights on the earth with deadly aim, was designated in our ancient speech by the word Donar itself, OS. Thunar, AS. Thunor, ON. Thôrr. (1) The natural phenomenon is called in ON. þruma [[clap of thunder]], or duna [[a rushing thundering noise]], both fem. like the GOthic þeihvô, which was perhaps adopted from a Finnic language.

There's a PDF on the subject that's on the net somewhere. I probably got the link for it here at Skadi, in fact.

As usual most of the evidence is in old books untranslated to English or available in snippets. By the time it was recorded Lappland was Christianised although divine names survived in oral lore and ritual.
