Orchestrated Campaign Undermines Oscar Chances of Kate Winslet's Good-Nazi Film, The Reader

Orchestrated campaign undermines Oscar chances of Kate Winslet's good-Nazi film, The Reader

WASHINGTON: Kate Winslet's chances of success at the Oscars are being undermined by an orchestrated campaign to dismiss her film, The Reader, as an airbrushing of Nazi history.

Ron Rosenbaum, the author of the critically acclaimed book Explaining Hitler, said last week that the movie was inaccurate and "the worst Holocaust film ever made". He called on Oscar judges to shun it.

His views were supported by Mark Weitzman, the New York head of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, who said The Reader was one of a series of recent Hollywood films that were guilty of "Holocaust revisionism".

Emails detailing the case against The Reader are being circulated in a covert campaign by supporters of rival films before the Academy Awards ceremony next weekend.

Critics had previously suggested that the film was an example of "Nazi porn" for its sympathetic treatment of Winslet's character, an illiterate war criminal who locks 300 Jewish women in a burning church, becomes an Auschwitz guard and then seeks redemption by learning to read while on trial after the war.

Winslet's prospect of following up her success in the Golden Globes and Baftas with a best actress Oscar is now in doubt.

Rosenbaum - whose book is regarded as a definitive account of how Hitler won over ordinary Germans - said The Reader was "a film that asks us to empathise with an unrepentant mass murderer".

In an impassioned article for the online magazine Slate, he complained that the film falsely implied that most Germans remained oblivious to Hitler's genocide until after the war. "This is a film whose essential metaphorical thrust is to exculpate Nazi-era Germans from knowing complicity in the Final Solution," he wrote.

Since Winslet's character, Hanna Schmitz, accepts a longer prison sentence because she is too embarrassed to admit that she could not have written a report on the immolation of 300 women, Rosenbaum said The Reader implied "that illiteracy is something more to be ashamed of than participating in mass murder".

The attacks could also have consequences for the film's director, Stephen Daldry, and writer, the playwright David Hare, both of whom also have Oscar nominations.

    No surprise there then.

Yet Swindler's Myth received all types of honours? Well ... it's a curious little thing, but it doesn't really surprise me much. If your name is Rosenzweig, Weinstein, Silverberg or Thalowitz - then your chances of success in Hollywood are increased tenfold. The credits of almost every Hollywood production - be it for the cinema or for the television - read like a Tel Aviv phone book. So it's hardly surprising that a few of our kosher friends can maintain their monopoly over what is acceptable and what isn't in the U.S. Filming Industry. Any questions?
-In kalte Schatten versunken...

(Heimdalls Wacht, In kalte Schatten versunken, stanzas 4-6)

The only thing I heard about this film was from Kate herself, militating against wearing a merkin. I do have it on DVD and can't really tell by the way cameras are on her, if she's wearing one or not. This plot seems like a female Nazi in prison story, just more "sensitive" and combined with some Elie Wiesel hysteria, nevertheless makes her character seem like some kind of She-Wolf of the S.S. Otherwise, it feels like "Hot For Teacher", or The Graduate with that song: "Mrs. Robinson", all of which were done by Jews.
