I agree with what Cygnus has to say.

For someone new to firearms with a limited budget, I would recommend a Remington Model 870 pump shotgun. The guage will be depending on your size. If you are big enough to control it, a 12 guage would be best; especially when thinking about logistics. Surplus police, and now military buck-shot is on the market...as well as parts and acceories.

With the pump you do not have the same concerns as with a semi-auto shotgun. The main concern being whether specialty rounds will cycle the action properly.

With normal slugs you can reach out to around 130 yards accurately. So, you have a longer reach than most people think. Up close, buck-shot would be in order. You certainly could down-load it with bird-shot and be effective inside your house on soft-skinned tagets (humans) if the need should arise.

If you want the ability to carry your weapon concealed, obviously a handgun is what you would want to look at. The type, size and caliber is set according to the person. Personally I like a Sig Sauer P220 in .45 acp for some things and a compact Kahr CW9 9mm for others.

Everyone who wants to be properly armed should have:
    1. Somenthing for concealed carry. A quality pistol that suits you.
    2. A shotgun. I prefer a Remington 870, but a Mossberg is good too.
    3. An intermediate assault type rife: AR15, AKM, Mini-14, etc.
    4. A long range rifle: M1a, AR10, AI, Remington 700, etc.

There are a few guns I detest: Taurus and anything in .40 cal. There are others, but thats for another post.

Please don' t get me wrong, but i would love to defend myself with a swedish axe. Just think about that moment, the burglar trying to break open a commode or something like that, not recognizing i 'm standing behind him with a huge axe raised up high. Haha

A friend of mine brought one from his sweden holiday from Gränsfors Bruks http://www.gransfors.com/. Now I wanna have one two. For self - defense of cause

I use a .357 with safety slugs. They fragment on impact, so they don't do a lot of damage after they pass through a wall.

Having limited funds, and two black belts in Kali, I prefer an Escrima stick, they are quieter and much less blood.

Because we're strictly talking about beginners here, I wouldn't recommend a pistol at all. Pistols take some training to acquire some accuracy, especially under the stress of a home invasion or self defense situation. Also shoulder fired weapons are ballistically superior to any handgun.

My recommendation would be a 12 gauge pump action or semi-automatic shotgun with an 18 1/2" barrel, extended magazine tube and rifle styled night sights. Load it with some nice "low recoil" OO buckshot and there's nothing that will come in your house that you can't put down. You'll even be able to hit it with your first or second try.

i think there are pistol safes were you type in a quick kode to get your gun out, like the the 4 button quick access code safe.

also shot guns with #4 and 00 buckshot are good fore home defense.

with the money it cost to get a black belt you cold buy guns instead.lol

As a European without the neccessary licenses I am not allowed to own any guns. Hence I don't know a thing about using them (except for shooting a pistole empty and holding a MP5 in a special building that was build up for training with firearms). But if I woke up in the middle of the night noticing someone broke into my house, a shotgun would come in handy. Not because of the massive firepower. Just because of the loud sound it makes when you load it. If the intruder is smart, he'd be gone after hearing this sound.

For a someone looking for a weapon I recommend a 12 guage pump. The semi autos seem to dislike certain rounds. They could end up malfunctioning when you need them most. Personally if I lived in Europe i would probably keep a spear and axe. Depending on the size of the house a spear would be pretty good against someone with a knife.

For my home defense, i sleep with my axe and good old trusty Remington 870 express magnum.( which is a type of pump action 12 guage for those who don't know the gun) I popped out the bit that limits you to three shots, so now it holds 5.

Funny that you mention this because that is exactly what happened here a few years ago. They heard the shotgun and then me yelling get the hell out. Before i could even get down the stairs i could hear the car peel out of the driveway.

For home defense, I have the Remington 870 express magnum pump action shotgun which takes 2.5 inch and 3 inch shells.

In the Netherlands fire arms are forbidden, unless you have a special permission.
So my best home defence is my appearance! Im big and tall. Few weeks earlier three turkish guys where making a mess in the alley behind my garden, I saw them but they didnt noticed me, so i kicked the garden door open, didnt say nothing and looked in their eyes. they were so frightend it was funny. They immediately took off!

And I have a nice collection of Kukri knives http://forums.skadi.net/showthread.php?t=95122&page=13
