Brief News Segment On Genetics: The English Are Basically Germans

I found this news segment on YouTube about the genetic legacy of the English being mostly Germanic which I have never doubted. They also claim the Welsh are basically the original Britons. They didn't really talk about Scotland but Scotland has alot of Germanic blood in the Lowlands. I mostly ignored the comments in the comment thread below the video.

Very interesting video, I'd not seen it before. It seems the ties between England and Germany are very strong indeed.

That's certainly the version I most want to believe in! But there are lots of different academic studies around as to the origins of the English. Some maintain that we have our genetic roots in the Ice Age. Remember, though, that a Germanic Identity is based on more than DNA alone.

I agree a Germanic Identity should not be based on DNA alone but also ones personal upbringing, ethnic pride and loyalty to the cultural identity one claims. As far as the different studies regarding the origins of the English, I have looked at most of the them and I feel the evidence points to the English and the Lowland Scots as being mostly Germanic ancestrally speaking. I am not suggesting they are 100% Germanic descended, none of the Germanic speaking countries are 100% Germanic ancestral wise.

There was a population boom of Germanic peoples just before the Great Migration Period occurred, it's possible the Anglos, Saxons and Jutes simply outnumbered and overwhelmed the Romano British and Celts along with killing and exiling them to other regions in the Isles or places in mainland Europe. There is also the Viking Period where many Danish and some Norwegian Vikings invaded and settled injecting even more Germanic blood and culture in what would become the UK. Despite the large number of adopted latin words from the Norman Period the English language is still classified as a Germanic Language with almost no Celtic words in its vocabulary. The Scots language despite its name is Germanic as well. The Iron Age factor is interesting as well in determining the level of ancestry from this group.

Regardless of what one feels on this controversial matter, the English need become proud of themselves once again and become much more ethnocentric to preserve their cultural ways. The Lowland Scots need be more honest about their Germanic ancestry.

Thank you Oswiu for showing me that but I was actually having trouble with my computer when I posted that youtube link. I have since corrected the problem and should not having any problems posting youtube links in that way.

Actually it would be nice if they had more cultural and genetic documentaries about this very subject that are in more depth and more objective when presenting the Germanic side of it. Maybe they show those more in the UK but not so much in the U.S.

Its a bit early to say really, Autosomal studies are still in their infancy, 23andme are offering the highest definition testing and this only started a year ago. Most studies are also very small, there needs to be wide spread sampling and testing in both countries to get an accurate result.

I think I'm sticking with Germanic-Celtic for England for now!

    This brings up a question.

Should the English and Germans see themselves as, say, the Austrians and Germans see each other? Or are they too distant to be long-lost-brothers?

Fair enough. I realize this a controversial subject for many. Some believe the English have various levels of Germanic, Celtic or even Iron Age genetics. I happen to believe the Germanic ancestral element is much more dominant than previously thought but I know others have different positions on this.

I am not quite sure you can say the English and Germans have quite the same level of closeness as the Austrians and Germans but then again I think it also depends on what region of Germany we are talking about. Germany has only been unified since 1871. I would say the English would have more in common culturally and genetically with Northern Germans than Southern Germans. I spoke with a couple who traveled extensively in England, Holland, Denmark and Northern Germany and they remarked how very similar the peoples were in these group of countries and regions.

The English is a mix between Angles, Saxons, Danes and maybe a little Celtish. Am I right?
