The carveval season is called the 5th season here, it is mainly celebrated in the Alps region. The Swabian-Alamannic carnival is called Fastnacht (Fasnacht, Fasnet) and never "Karneval" - during Fastnacht the Alemannic regions are in a "state of emergency", many parades where costumed "fools", ghosts, devils, gnomes, trolls, witches and daemons parade - dancing to chapels playing noisy Guggemusik, give away candies, food and drinks and mock the authorities. Notorious are the pig-bladder "flails" to hit visitors, and other shenanigans. These customs are more common in catholic regions where many pre-Christian customs have been preserved.
