    Post Traditional Folk Songs Of Your Nation

    Post folk songs from your country and add a little piece of information relevant to the song. I'll post first two traditional songs performed by Martin Carthy:

    Bows of London - Martin and Eliza Carthy

    "The Twa Sisters" is a murder ballad that recounts the tale of a girl drowned by her sister. It is first known to have appeared on a broadside in 1656 as "The Miller and the King's Daughter." At least 21 English variants exist under several names, including "Minnorie" or "Binnorie", "The Cruel Sister", "The Wind and Rain", "Two Sisters", and the "Bonnie Bows of London". The ballad was collected by Francis J. Child (Child 10) and is also listed in the Roud Folk Song Index
    The theme of this ballad was common in many northern European languages. There are 125 different variants known in Swedish alone. Its general Scandinavian classification is TSB A 38; and it is (among others) known as Den talende strængelek or De to søstre (DgF 95) in Danish, Hørpu ríma (CCF 136) in Faroese, Hörpu kvæði (IFkv 13) in Icelandic, Dei tvo systar in Norwegian, and De två systrarna (SMB 13) in Swedish.

    In the Norse variants, the older sister is depicted as dark and the younger as fair, often with great contrast, comparing the one to soot or the other to the sun or milk. This can inspire taunts from the younger about the older's looks.

    In most of the Norwegian and some of the Swedish variants, the story ends by the instrument being broken and the younger sister coming alive again. In a few, she was not actually drowned, but saved and nursed back to health; she tells the story herself.

    This tale is also found in prose form, in fairy tales such as The Singing Bone, where the siblings are brothers instead of sisters.This is widespread throughout Europe; often the motive is not jealousy because of a lover, but the younger child's success in winning the object that will cure the king, or that will win the father's inheritance.
    Sovay - Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick

    Sovay is a traditional English folk song (Roud # 7) about a young woman who dresses and arms herself as a highwayman in order to test her suitor. In disguise she robs her suitor of nearly all his possessions, but even under threat of death he refuses to give up the gold ring given by Sovay, thus proving his devotion. Sovay subsequently confesses the ruse to her lover and returns his various possessions, admonishing him only that had he indeed given up the ring, she would have killed him. The name 'Sovay' is probably a corruption of 'Sophie' or 'Sylvie' - both of which appear instead in some versions of the song. Similarly pronounced names are the French Sauvee and Scandinavian Solveig.
    Lastly, I'm going to add one more song, a modern Scottish one written and originally performed by Dougie MacLean, however performed in this instance by a Youtube poster going by the name Cynewulf. The lyrics stand out to me as being applicable to every single one of us, our respective homelands and our larger, European, homeland, too:

    Turning Away - Cynewulf

    In darkness we do what we can
    In daylight we're oblivion
    Our hearts so raw and clear
    Are turning away, turning away from here

    On the water we have walked
    Like the fearless child
    What was fastened we've unlocked
    Revealing wondrous wild
    And in search of confirmation
    We have jumped into the fire
    And scrambled with our burning feet
    Through uncontrolled desire

    There's a well upon the hill
    From our ancient past
    Where an age is standing
    Still holding strong and fast
    And there's those that try to tame it
    And to carve it into stone
    Ah, but words cannot extinguish it
    However hard they're thrown

    On Loch Etive they have worked
    With their highland dreams
    By Kilcrennan they have nourished
    In the mountain streams
    And in searching for acceptance
    They had given it away
    Only the children of their children know
    The price they had to pay

    Loch Lomond

    By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes

    Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomon'
    Where me and my true love were ever wont tae gae
    On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'
    Chorus

    Oh you tak' the high road and I'll tak the low road
    An' I'll be in Scotland afore ye,
    But me and my true love will never meet again
    On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'
    Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen.

    On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomon',
    Where in purple hue, the hielan' hills we view,
    An' the moon comin' out in the gloamin'.
    Chorus

    The wee birdies sing, and the wild flowers spring,

    While in sunshine the waters are sleepin'
    But the broken heart it kens nae second spring again,
    Tho' the waefu' may cease free their greetin'.
    Chorus

    Meaning of unusual words:
    braes=hillsides
    gae=go
    gloamin'=twilight
    waefu'=woeful
    Doesn't really need explaining.lol

    Folk Music

    I wanted to create this thread in order to list some examples of folk music and while I appreciate Germanic oriented folk music I do like types of folk music found all over Europe so hopefully I will not be scorned for that.

    Here's my first contribution:

    Swedish Folk

    Ranarim - Hoga Berg
    National Socialism is the only salvation for Germanics and Europids everywhere. Capitalism, libertarianism, and communism is the enemy.

    National socialized collectivism must prevail over radical individualism.

    Does Folk-Metal count? If so, pretty much anything by Finntroll is my favourite song. "Calling the Rain" and "Slania's Song" by Eluveitie are awesome as well.

    Here is some traditional folk music from Ireland - the island on the edge of Europe, unscathed to an extent from the succesive waves of invasions that affected mainland Europe!
