    Exclamation (Germanic) Language Death

It seems to me as the world is becoming more homogenized through globalization and technology there exists the real danger of Germanic languages dying out. It is discouraging to see words like "Song" and "Story" being used when they have perfectly acceptable native German equivalents, not to mention words like "Bookingfirma". English is a language whose Germanic elements have already been significantly eroded due to French influence.

Now of course Latin replaced the Iberian and Gaulish languages in pre-history, an example of language death and homogenization. This was brought about through Roman roads, administration and military presence. Is there not also an even greater threat of language death nowadays as there is the strong influence of American media, commerce, and/or military presence in Germany and other Germanic lands? The threat is ever greater as these roads (i.e. the internet) are infinitely faster and more efficient than those built by the Romans. As technology progresses the world
    becomes more homogenised and centralised.

On a side note, does anyone know of any good bands that sing in Swedish and have clean vocals? Particularly folk metal or folk rock bands? No, Finntroll doesn't count as they are always shreiking unintelligably.. The appeal of that over clean Slayeresque vocals I will never understand.

Rammstein helped me learn German, it's ever harder to learn Swedish as the bands have all sold out and sing pa Engelsk despite supposedly being proud of the Scandinavian heritage.

    End rant.

There be Manegarm for one, they sing in Swedish. They even had a pure folk album called "Urminnes Hävd - The Forest Sessions", which I felt was a great release. On that album, the vocals are also clean. On other albums, vocals are mixed, though mostly growled. It might still be worth checking out their folky album.

    Their folky Stuff (audio only)
    Manegarm - Utfärd"

    Their heavier Stuff
    Manegarm - Sigrblot

There is an amazing Swedish Folk band, Fejd. Of course, they lack all the heavy guitars but they are lovely to listen to. (Both songs provided song only)

    Fejd - Yggdrasil

    FEjd - Huldran

Then of course, there is all that Viking Rock stuff like Ultima Thule, Enhärjarna, Volund Smed, Nidhöggs Vrede, etc. etc. Most of them have most of their song in their mother tongue.

If we are talking Norwegian, try Glittertind, which is a Viking Rock/Viking Metal fusion. The minority of his songs are in English, most of them are in Norwegian.

And then let me look for some of the more notable underground bands, which I may have stored somewhere. I'll also ask a friend to what can be suggested. If harsh vocals were no issue, I'd suggest two fairly melodic but excellent underground bands, Istapp and Trymheim.

On the actual topic of language erosion, well, I shall be offering a lengthy opinion on that in a while.
-In kalte Schatten versunken...

(Heimdalls Wacht, In kalte Schatten versunken, stanzas 4-6)

It is a serious problem and it will get worse. There is a trend in Sweden with "English schools", schools that emphasize on learning English by holding the education in both Swedish and English (with up to 50% done in English), the teachers are most often Englishmen or women who have immigrated here. Another important factor for the schools' popularity is the more strict and orderly environment which these schools uphold, something which becomes appealing to many families once they have experienced the chaos that is the Swedish public school system, curtesy of the socialists.

I am very concerned about this trend as it not only a threat to the students' ability and knowledge of their own native tongue, this type of education could also serve to create students that are even less in touch with their identity and heritage as they are moulded in a heavily English (foreign) environment. They might also act to spread internationalist ideals amongst their students, especially if they enter these schools in their pre-teens and exit them in their late teens.

I just think it's ridicilous. If you want to learn a language you can learn it alot better and faster at home than you ever will in school. Any level of profficiency that I might have acquired over the years in the English language is the result of my own personal effort. If you have it in you you will learn English without much difficulty, and if you don't then you might just want to focus a bit extra on trying to become profficient in your own native tongue at least. Being good at your own language beats being decent at two and good at none.

    Awww. I like Finntroll. Hahaha.

International and multicultural ideals, in my opinion, are eroding a lot of languages and cultural aspects not just in Sweden but all over the world.

Vintersorg is another good Swedish metal band that uses clean vocals:

    Vintersorg - Till Fjälls

    What else?

And it is not much more than a North German dialect, come to think of it.

Just "Plattdeutsch", that happens to be written.

You should listen to Dungen, they even played on Conan, and they always sing in Swedish.
