    Rented Versus Owned Property

Do you live in your own house or apartment, or do you pay rent? I live in my parents' house for the moment. What is your view on each type of property? Is it better to pay rent or to buy your own property? In my view there are advantages and disadvantages about each.

    Rented:
Cheaper for students and people with lower budgets
Ideal for short-term stays, if you travel a lot or move from place to place

    Owned:
An investment if you plan to stay in the same city in the long term
Reduces cost in the long term

    I live at home.
I'll be renting an apartment once I start a career and a home when I get around to starting a family.

I own my home. We live in a small town in a very rural area. Much better to own property around here than to rent.

I currently live in a rented apartment. I've never lived in an owned property (well, owned by the landlord). I would like to eventually own property, though there is an argument that land is not an entirely reliable investment and that it is better to rent a house and invest in the stock market, and another which is that you do not truly own property in any jurisdiction in which there is a property tax and the property can be confiscated for nonpayment of this tax.

Hmm, yes, I forgot there could be a third category of peoples. I added an other option.

I own mine, my grandmother had bought it for me when I was little.

It's small and old, in rather bad shape as the previous tenants managed to wreck it, but it's all I have right now. Housing in Greece is disproportionately expensive as compared to salaries, and I can't afford an appartment in an immigrant-free area

The bills are already expensive for me and my salary is average. But, unlike most Greeks, I prefer frugality and discomfort over leeching on my parents until I get married

Like I can afford to buy a house in the south east of England

I live with my parents still. I could have started renting by now, but here, once you start renting you'll never be able to save for a deposit on a house. Rent + bills + council tax takes up almost all of a monthly salary. I'd rather stick it out at my parents, pay my keep and be able to save for a deposit. Maybe some time around 2026 I'll have enough to get a mortgage . Depressing.

Land is the BEST investment in my opinion. Owning a home/land is as close to being a free man as one can get in the current system. But unlike renting, you have to go through a period of debt to get there. Debt = Slavery.

I rent a student room, if that counts. I believe the American word for it, is dorm.

My family has own property (because most of my ancestors were farmers and people of animal husbandry) and so we own estate and a old un-farmed farmyard (which currently rots). Anyway, it´s all on the countryside and not very luxurious.

I think owned property has many advantages. You can be sure that the ground is your ground, that the walls are your walls and that no one can throw you out of your home.
Furthermore, I´m not so flexible and I don´t want to move from place to place. I love my own region and want to stay here, like most of my ancestors.

Currently I´m living in an apartment. But me and my boyfriend propose to build a house for our family in some years.
