    Owned here.........

I have lived in my Own Home, for the last 39 years, since 1970.
Mostly it is with a small mortgage, because of the tax advantage, it gives.
For 33 years I lived in a suburban home, outskirts of Indianapolis, on 1/2 acre lot, totally landscaped. You could sunbathe in our back yard, secluded.
    I raised 5 children there, in a 1500' house.

The last 6 years, since before I retired we have live on 13 acres in a rural location. It's a bit bigger, but built kinda strange. Nice interesting house, overlooking a valley with a stream, that overflows, each time it rains over an inch and a half or more, with several neighbors across the valley.
I am very fortunate to have made right decisions, hunnh.

I live with my parents still. I could have started renting by now, but here, once you start renting you'll never be able to save for a deposit on a house. Rent + bills + council tax takes up almost all of a monthly salary. I'd rather stick it out at my parents, pay my keep and be able to save for a deposit. Maybe some time around 2026 I'll have enough to get a mortgage . Depressing.

Land is the BEST investment in my opinion. Owning a home/land is as close to being a free man as one can get in the current system. But unlike renting, you have to go through a period of debt to get there. Debt = Slavery.
I agree. This is the same problem I face, at the moment I live with parents and use the large garden and the land they rent but I need to get some place of my own.
It's amazing how more expensive it is here compared to a nearby town - the postcode changes and the prices drastically drop from where I live now.

I've rented so far because of moving around and traveling, but my dream is to settle down to my own family. Then I will want to buy a house with a yard and small garden. The money I pay rent could go as a monthly payment for a house. It's good to own some property and have your own roof, it can be rented out or sold and used as an income source. So I'm definitely looking into owning some property.

I bought my home five years ago and have five years left on the mortgage. My mortgage payment with escrow is less than I was paying in rent. I should have bought a long time ago.

I never owned. There were moments I have wanted to throughout my time, but my life has a strange and determined way of always throwing hurdles one after another, rarely a break.
It turned out a good thing we rented. We were always able to raise the children in the country and when we were home, it was much as if we were in our own. Every landlord I have ever had, took one look at my references and let us be at quite an affordable monthly price. They knew we took care of their land always with improvements. Often I still receive calls from ex-landlords asking if I need a place to rent, they want me back.

Now, with health hurdles, location of employment being moved, I am moving into my sister and brother in law's home at the lake. My nephew and his wife are working away right now, but will return in two years tops, and there is still room for all.

It all began with a three room cabin. In those days I slept in the boat in the summer. Now it is a home large enough we can lose each other, lol. Funny, I am in freshly updated but original cabin bedroom, they're upstairs in the new; yet I have the best view. Rent is very accommodating. As my sister put it " we have to heat and cool the whole place whether it is 2 or 5 of us." It was always our plan to grow old together, and it came upon the time to make the move. I am lucky in this situation and I'm not a spring chicken anymore!

We just refinanced our property for a better 15-year fixed mortgage, and better property insurance.

Since remodelling and extensive lanscaping work, property value is $25,000 higher than original closing cost.
Not all in life is at it appears to be.
