Which Event of 2008 Had the Biggest Impact on Austria?

I saw this poll in an online newspaper about Austria. I'm interested in how not just Austrians but also outsiders see 2008 for Austria. Which event of 2008 had the biggest impact on Austria? Please motivate your answer.

For a long time I thought nothing can beat the impact of the horrible Amstetten case with Josef Fritzl - but then came this damned 11th October and the mysterious accident of Jörg Haider!

So my decision is clear: The death of Jörg Haider, followed by the Amstetten-issue. The most postive effect for Austria was the swing to the right in the general elections, of course.

I voted for,"The swing to the right in the general election". Hopefully this will be the beginning of a longterm trend.

However, outside of Europe I think the story about the girl in the cellar was the biggest news story about Austria. Most Americans don't follow Austrian politics (except for paranoid Jews) & "Girl locked in cellar for years having father's babies" is the sort of sensational news story that gets a lot of attention.

Politically, I'd say the swing to the right in the general election had the greatest impact. In terms of scandal/tabloid news, Haider's death as well as the Amstetten case. Externally, and in which concerns Austria's image I think the Amstetten case was what had the biggest impact. Not just because of the horrid circumstances, but also because it came after Natasha Kampusch's story. This resulted in pretty nasty comments about Austria(ns) in the international press, connections to the "nazi past" (why would they leave this one out, of course...) and the like. It was ignored that horrible cases of brutality, incest and kidnapping existed in other countries too and it wasn't something "typically" Austrian.

In my view it was Haider's death. It was even bigger as an event than the election results. His funeral was like the funeral of a head of state. It was in all the news, even in the countries where Austrian politics aren't followed step by step. And last but not least, it was a very big hit to Austrian politics and the Austrian right.

Maybe a tie between the swing to the right in the general election & the death of right-wing spearhead Jörg Haider. I suspect they're somehow connected anyway.
