Yes, in principle. I won't carry a donor card though, that's just too morbid. I'm not going to argue with anybody about it.

I'm a little wary (paranoid) that those concerned with my treatment and survival might not be quite so enthusiastic to do their best, knowing that there are lots of lovely healthy organs there for the harvesting, as a bonus, should things not go so well.

It looks like the EU is at fault here:

    http://bnp.org.uk/2009/01/organs-of-...to-foreigners/

According to EU law, all patients from member states have the right to seek treatment in all EU countries. Britain is not, however, obliged to treat them and the decision is left to the hospital trusts themselves. If the trust decides to treat the patient, then they have equal rights to British organs.

The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust in London has carried out four liver transplant operations for foreigners in the last year whilst King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London gave 19 organs to foreign patients last year. A spokesman for King’s College defended its actions:

“We are continuing to treat citizens of the European Union as they have the same entitlement to treatment under the NHS as UK patients under European law.”

That doesn't quite make sense, they have the 'right to seek treatment' but not the 'right to receive treatment'? I don't know about health care specifically, but EU countries are required to offer welfare, education, and other benefits to other EU citizens.

That's my stance on the matter as well. I'm a registered donor, so they may as well be put to good use when I'm gone.

I think that post mortem donating organs should be mandatory. Pretty useless to take perfectly working organs to your grave while you might save lives with them.

I'm sure if I lived in east flanders I would donate indiscriminately but I live in southern california where my organs would probably to some mexican on death row or to a rich jew in hollywood.

It's difficult to control that with a will, as you would have to will it to a specific person, and depend on you dying right when that person needs a transplant.

Would it be illegal in America to state in your will that you only won't to offer your organs to someone of your own ethno-cultural background?

I believe that's very normal. A person does more for his family than his friends, more for his friends than strangers, more for his countrymen than for foreigners.

    It's social context.

Only for my family or if I could choose the person they go to. I wouldn't want my organs to be used by just anyone.
