In my view it's important to differentiate between medieval music proper (the music from the middle age) and neo-medieval music, like medieval rock.

    Medieval music

    Le Manuscrit du Roi (ca.1270-1320):

    Le Manuscrit du Roi

    13th century Medieval Music: Ductia

    13th century Medieval Music: Ductia

    Neo-medieval music

    The German band Schelmish:

    Schelmish- So Allein

    Helium Vola:

    Helium Vola - Selig

    Estampie:

    Estampie- Chanterai por mon corage

    Hedningarna:

    Hedningarna - Joupolle Joutunut

    Danish band Sorten Muld:

Sorten Muld - Bonden og Elverpigen

    Valravn:

    Valravn - Hedebys

    Norwegian band Gåte:

    Bendik og Årolilja - Gåte

    Great topic!

I have a ton of (genuinely reconstructed and traditionally played) medieval music that I'd love to introduce to all those interested.

But first let me share with you this modern yet still quite traditional version of a song that goes back to at least Renaissance times, but is probably from the Middle Ages. The artist is David Eugene Edwards in his formation Woven Hand. This guy is amazing by the way. His previous band was 16 Horsepower.

Woven Hand - Down In Yon Forest

    Both bands are amazing!
An absolut must have for every lover of neo-folk

OT: does someone know by accident the artwork used as background in the clip?

Unfortunately I didnt found an unplugged version, In Extremo also plays complete without electrics occasionally.

    In Extremo - Palästinalied

Walther von der Vogelweide, 13th century

    In Extremo Villeman Og Magnhild

Nature-mystic ballade from the middle ages

And when Fenris (Darkthrone) plays that song, it sounds like that

    Storm - Villeman

You have to check out Adorned Brood

Great band and one of the best I've heard to mix Metal and Medieval/Renaissance.
    Plus they're German!

Really great adds so far, I'm surprised nobody mentioned Vox Vulgaris yet, unless I missed it. Will add some as I think of them:

Vox Vulgaris - La Suite Meurtriere

    Vox Vulgaris - Cantiga 166

Good song but that painting bothers me, the guy looks like a moor or something.

    Awesome thread!

Here's some real medieval music known to us thanks to ancient manuscripts:

Abundance de felonnie - Jehan de Lescurel (?-c. 1304) Parisian composer, thief and murderer, left us 34 compositions.

What Do You Guys Think About Gregorian Chants? What is Its Origin and Importance?

I personally find them very soothing.

A song i remember from the game Icewind Dale, the music in the Temple of Tempus, it was really beautiful.
