How Often do you Use the Runes?

I used to be interested in the runes, but I don't read over them anymore, in fact I tend to avoid them.

I don't think they are essential for a practicing heathen.

How many of you guys use the runes on a daily/weekly basis?

I'm pretty obsessed with them actually. I love reading about them, memorizing the rune poems, learning about how the different rune rows evolved, and trying to "internalize" them as they say. I don't think I've ever used them for divination though.

I agree with you however, the runes are certainly not essential for the heathen. It would probably help knowing how to read them phonetically though.

Im just starting to read and get involved with the Elder Germanic Furthark. I agree there not essential to a heathen as such, but with so much of our lore lost to us I think the more tools at our disposal in understanding that lore is helpful. Of course a heathen can live by the NNV and the nine charges without consulting the runes.

Sometimes I use them daily in some way or another and sometimes I don't for weeks. I almost never bother with rune divination, just not my thing. While it may not be a requirement to know runes to be heathen I think getting at least a working knowledge of them gives a really important insight into how our ancestors thought, I am seeing more and more the fundamental aspects of nature and life that they symbolize. But to truely know the runes is a path that not everyone has time, patience nor inclination to do. Sometimes I set them aside and live my life and when I come back to them I find I have many new insights.

    Who uses them ?

Well, I have used them for divination, with variable results, but not for much of anything else, though I did once put a runic blessing over my front door and no harm befell the house. Of course, none befell it after the blessing was covered with new siding, either.

I usually use them when I want to write down personal/secret/etc things, because runes are cryptic for others. But I have to agree to what have been said before me, that you dont have to use runes to be a heathen, just have some basic knowledge of them.

As to when it comes to divination, Im going to buy runestones, but thats more for decoration purpose than to use in divination. Would be fun to try sometime though

    I don't use them, whatsoever

It's never been in my interest to learn them. And as said before, nature is my deity, and I don't need runes to understand nature.
