Cultural Landscapes are landscapes created and maintained by human activity and consist of a mosaic of ecosystems which share a number of environmental parameters. The Cultural Landscape Ecosystems (CLEs) that form the basic elements of the landscapes are ecosystems where dynamic assemblages of plant, animal and micro-organisms and their non-living environment interact as functional units and where anthropogenic impacts are an integral part of the system.
The cultural landscape can only he understood by its antithesis: untouched, unspoilt nature. The realization of this dualism is the basis for understanding and appreciating either.
