Arrow Database on Cultural Landscapes and Cultural Landscape Ecosystems in Europe

Database on Cultural Landscapes and Cultural Landscape Ecosystems in Europe

CULTBASE is a result of the PAN European Thematic Network on Cultural Landscapes and their Ecosystems. A Thematic Network financed by the European Commission from November 2002 to October 2005.
For more information about PAN: look at the website: http://pan.cultland.org.

The database includes information on the specific cultural landscapes and their ecosystems that have been focused during the PAN project. CULTBASE is therefore not a representative database with information on all cultural landscapes present in Europe.

The aim of CULTBASE is to be a source of information for students, researchers, planners, policy makers, NGOs as well as the interested public.

CULTBASE is open to scientists, officials, organisations and others to register data on other cultural landscapes.

This is not my definition but here is one.
Cultural Landscapes are landscapes created and maintained by human activity and consist of a mosaic of ecosystems which share a number of environmental parameters. The Cultural Landscape Ecosystems (CLEs) that form the basic elements of the landscapes are ecosystems where dynamic assemblages of plant, animal and micro-organisms and their non-living environment interact as functional units and where anthropogenic impacts are an integral part of the system.
The cultural landscape can only he understood by its antithesis: untouched, unspoilt nature. The realization of this dualism is the basis for understanding and appreciating either. Here's another clean cut definition:

A cultural landscape is a geographic area that includes cultural and natural resources associated with an historic event, activity, person, or group of people. Cultural landscapes can range from thousands of acres of rural land to homesteads with small front yards. They can be man-made expressions of visual and spatial relationships that include grand estates, farmlands, public gardens and parks, college campuses, cemeteries, scenic highways, and industrial sites. Cultural landscapes are works of art, texts and narratives of cultures, and expressions of regional identity. They also exist in relationship to their ecological contexts.
