When is an Oath an Oath?

When is an oath an oath? Does it have to be sworn in the presence of other people or can it be sworn in privacy, if someone was on their own for instance? Does just making a promise vocally count as an oath? Or does there have to be a procedure of some sort carried out?

I'm clueless when it comes to this so I would be interested to hear what other people have to say.

I would say that as long as two or more people swear to the same thing, then it is an oath. I believe that oath refers more to a hardbound promise than a ritual, necessarily. if you proclaim that you're making an oath, then it's an oath.

Perhaps it depends on the manner of the oath?

I mean that you can swear an oath alone, but that may be only if the "content" of the oath, don't include any other person. Ofcourse, you could swear an oath to kill someone, but I do not think that's the matter?

Anyways, the most important thing about oaths, is to stay true to them.

I think an oath can be an oath if no mortal ears hear it — not even your own. It can be within your own mind.

I believe that the gods hear every oath and consider each one binding.
