Would you kill for your God(s) ?

I voted NO. I consider killing for one's God(s) to be rabid fanaticism. God is almighty. The gods are mighty. They can take care of themselves. Going to war because "God wills it !" (the motto of the Crusaders) is presumptuous. What right has any man to claim to know the mind of God ?

Not that I think that the Crusades were fought on religious grounds, whatever their rallying cry may have been. They were fought for LAND. Noblemen in France and other nations north of the Alps would bestow upon their sons fiefs in lands they didn't own, such as Sicily and Sardinia, and tell them to go and claim them.

If a king, prince, duke, count, etc. kept splitting his land up among his descendants, sooner or later he wouldn't hold title to enough to support him. More land was needed and the Crusades provided an excellent means of obtaining it, not only from the paynim, but even from fellow Christians in the Byzantine Empire.

Killing for one's God(s) has always provided a fine pretext for land grabs. Just offhand, I can't think of a single "holy" war which was really fought for religious reasons. The Islamic jihad under the direct command of the Prophet created a great Islamic empire though "of course" the propagation of Islam was the REAL reason for the conquests.

Doubtless, then as today, some of those who took part in these wars were motivated by religious fanaticism. It enabled them to treat those who stood in their way as less than human and worthy only to be exterminated. "Allah, the merciful, the compassionate" has NEVER shown any mercy or compassion toward infidels.

The conquistadores propagated the Roman Catholic faith by slaughtering and enslaving the Indios. "Of course" the land they seized which became great slave-worked plantations and the shiploads of gold they sent back to Spain
weren't the REAL reason for their conquests. It was just to propagate the faith ("of course").

"Saint" Olav (aka Olav the Fat) murdered his own people not ("of course") just to consolidate his own political power in Norway, but to save their poor heathen souls from eternal damnation. He killed only for the "White Christ" also known as "The Prince of Peace."

The few people who have actually believed that they were killing for their God(s) were and are deluded. The rest were and are hypocrites.

For them? No. In a situation where such action (Gods forbid) is necessary for the protection of my folk would I like to feel I have their approval and even backing? Yes. For them, in as much as they are an inseperatable part of my folk and my culture? Yes. Just because they say so? Certainly not. Right action is right action, it shouldn't need a God to personally direct one's every move. But I can see where honoring one's God/s while caring out right or wrong action can be viewed through a warped lens by history. Sometimes if prevailing history has judged behavior wrong it often calls people religious fanatics, if it is judged good the doing it "for god/s" is often toned down and other reason's emphasized. The 13 colonies were founded by a bunch of religious fanatics;-) (this is not to say there were not plenty of religious zealots who twisted "for God/s" to justify plenty of action that was not actually good for the people)

Egil you summed up my feelings on this matter 100%.

The Gods are superior to us ordinary men and women they don't need our protection and they can take care of us.

Faith is okay, but zealotry is just plain stupid.
What does not kill me, makes me stronger- Friedrich Nietzsche Twilight of the Idols 1888

It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong- Voltaire

Government can easily exist without laws, but law cannot exist without government- Bertrand Russell

Abortion is advocated only by persons who have themselves been born- Ronald Reagan

America had often been discovered before Columbus, but it had always been hushed up- Oscar Wilde
