Original metal had the rhythms of male sexuality, heartbeats, steel, power and the vistas of the human longing for what is yet to be known. A lot of social criticism too, in the music of my generation across the board. People forget how critical the work of the early Beatles and Rolling Stones was of the working class situation and how evocative of its pathos. "Eleanor Rigby" being one the best examples. But they also contained rather hauntingly beautiful working class love lyrics and a pageant of working class life sung through the eyes of people doing everyday things. It was vibrant and competitive and new. It was eventually killed by disco and commercial ethnic music. R.I.P.
Don't underestimate nowadays metal. It's so much more than what you first see and hear. To truly appreciate metal, you must understand it and become a part of it. To just listen to it and think it "sounds cool" just isn't enough!

Besides, the sountrack to The Gladiator is awesome!
