    An interview with Edred Thorsson

(I am everything else than a fan or believer of his words; but I found this on the web and thought I can share it with you.)

An interview with Edred Thorsson, PhD. 1992.
    Ymir-Drighten of the Rune-Gild.

    Author of;
Futhark: a Handbook of Rune Magic 1984 , Runelore: a Handbook
of Esoteric Runology 1986, At the Well of Wyrd: A Handbook of
Runic Divination, Rune Might: the Secret Practices of the
German Rune Magicians 1989, A Book of Troth 1989,Book of Ogham
1991, The Nine Doors of Midgard 1991, and others.

Q: How did you receive your introduction to the Runes?

For some time (1972-1974), I had been interested in the
practice of Magic, and had a long standing interest in
Germanic culture. The passageway between these two areas of
interest were obscure until at one moment in a flash of
inspiration the word 'Runa' was whispered in my ear in the
summer of 1974. I at once began to investigate the Runes.
I found K. Spiesberger's book 'Runemagie' in the University of
Texas library and thus began my practical introduction to the
    world of Germanic esoterica.

Q: To what do you attribute the rise of interest in the
    current popular study of Runes?

The Runes had been revived as a popular form of esoteric
interest in Germany in the early part of this century. They
found a wide and deep following because they spoke directly to
the hearts and minds of those who began to use them. These
were the meta-programs of psychic information inherited along
genetic lines from the beginning of time. It is really for the
same reasons that Runes find a powerful reception today around
    the world.
Runes have an intrinsic power for those of Germanic descent.
But they also have a universal power for any one who would
    undertake their study and practice.
Currently there is interest in native traditions- but what the
Rune-Gild calls for is an interest in one's own true native
tradition- not those of some exotic people. The work (of self-
transformation), that needs to done through Runic practice is
only distracted from one if concentrates on going to exotic
locales or ideologies to try to answer some very basic
questions. The interest in Runes is, I think, an
acknowledgment of the importance of the basic and the truly
native (inborn) aspects of spirituality in our culture today.

Q: In your books, you offer the student a series of exercises
involving the repetition of certain letter sounds and postures
corresponding to the Runic alphabet. What results from this
practice and how does it happen?

The 'rote' repetition of certain sounds (coupled with the
enforcement of visualizations of Rune-shapes, etc), is a way
to *make the Runes your own*- to learn the hidden meta-grammar
or program of the Runes. It really is a process of 'loading'
the Runic system fully into your own psychosomatic complex so
that it can be used for more practical ends later.
Although the 'loading' process has its own intrinsic value, as
it is a way of transforming the Self - moving it from a non-
Runic to a Runic state of being. This process happens on two
levels; conscious and unconscious. The 'rote' repetition helps
the process take place on an unconscious level, while the
learning of lore and philosophy helps make the whole
    conscious.

Q: The Norse myths speak of an afterlife in Valhalla - what do
you think happens when you die?

What happens when one dies is largely contingent on the state
of consciousness one has developed at the point of death. To
survive death in a conscious way, one must be conscious of
one's own death. The survival of the self beyond the limits of
a single lifetime is the essence of the meaning of "Valhalla"-
the "Hall of the Fallen". This is why it was important in
ancient times for a man to be in a state of hyper-
    consciousness at the moment of death (for example in battle);
and why a 'straw death' (in an unconscious or sleeping state)
was abhorred by the warrior or magician. On the other hand,
those who wanted only to be re-absorbed into the womb of Hel-
to be organically (if unconsciously) reborn in another
lifetime are certainly obliged as a matter of natural process
    of the Norns.

Q: Have you ever cast a Rune upon someone? What happened?

I have worked only rarely with Runic operations that were
meant to affect another person directly. In the practice of
sexual magic and with the co-operation of others, Runes can be
cast and re-cast between and among various magicians.

I did have occasion to raise a 'niding-pole' or Runic cursing
pole. It seems that a certain professor at my university was
for some obscure reason keeping me from getting a job as a
teaching assistant. I raised a niding-pole against her - as it
was important to my development to get the job in question.
The next semester she was gone from the university, having
taken a better paying job elsewhere. The pole was intended not
to kill or destroy (although if that had happened I would have
been at peace with that too), but merely to get her out of the
picture so that my own goals could be met. But I was young
then and have found little need for such activities in recent
    years.

Q: Why did the Nazis use the Swastika and the Sig rune? How
did the use of these runes affect their rise to power?

Of course, the 'swastika' is not a Rune as such, but it is a
holy symbol common to all the Indo-European people (and
beyond). It was used by many people and sects (including the
Theosophical Society) which traced their spiritual heritage
back to Indo-European roots. The Nazis, and there is solid
documentary evidence that Adolf Hitler himself chose the
'hakenkreuz' as the official symbol of the NSDAP, used the
swastika because it had strong associations with the Indo-
European, or as they would have called it then, Aryan
heritage. This heritage, as opposed to the situation today,
had a very wide popular appeal. The same was true of the Runes
and 'rune-like' designs. The Runes held a deep level
fascination for many in the leadership of the Nazi Party, but
at the same time their widespread popular appeal was a decided
advantage in the waging of propaganda campaigns. The Runes and
other archaic designs of Indo-Germanic origin were simply
popular- this is the true and powerful foundation of their use
in the occult manipulation of the masses. Such manipulations
must start with solid foundations in the popular culture of
the time. Runes could hardly be used in the same way today.

Q: Do you actually see your Runic practices as a religion or a
technology? (A religion which might replace Christianity one
    day?)

Runic theory is the esoteric science of psycho-cosmology ( of
the subjective and objective universe and the links between
them), and its practice is the technology for
    psychocosmological (self / world) transformations.
Operant Runology is in and of itself not a 'religion', but was
originally the most sophisticated level of a religious
worldview- that of the ancient Germanic peoples.
Runic science is not geared to be a religion in a complete
sense - it is more a personal and individual system of
    initiation.
The 'Troth' spearheaded by the organization called the 'Ring
of Troth', is however, geared to provide a complete
alternative religious worldview based on ancient Germanic
principles. The Ring of Troth, however is not affiliated with
the Rune-Gild or any other organization.
The Rune-Gild and the Ring of Troth are in no way 'anti-
Christian'. These organizations are simply 'non-Christian'.

I bought his book solely because of the bag of Runes it included, but his psychobabble was a complete pipedream and I haven't actually read it in 20 years, yet still appreciate the physical Runes, maybe because I'm too lazy to carve them myself. Flowers runs with the Armanen Runosophy of List and turns it into Jungian New Age BS, which absolutely disgusted me about Wicca before. I'm just a huge fan of Futhark orthography, as the most aesthetically pleasing script I've ever seen, followed by Gothic and Fraktur and wish all three were universally used by the Germanic world.

I must correct myself: Ralph Blum made the book in a box with Runes in a bag, but Flowers wrote a book not worth keeping, because it was mostly psychobabble rather than instructions for reading and writing Runic. I would like to become an accomplished wizard of spellcraft someday.

Oh yeah. It seems that basically, proto-Germanic was originally in the Elder Futhark, North Germanic in the Younger Futhark, East Germanic in Gothic and West Germanic in what ended up as Fraktur. Carolingian miniscule seems to have been for Church Latin, first and foremost, but is the basis of the modern typeface.
