Jorvik Viking Centre and Festival 2006

    16th –26th February

For twenty-one years, York has resounded to the cries of hardy warriors, sea masters and ship lords who have trod the whale's way to terrorise the citizens of the city at the annual JORVIK Viking Festival.

In February, they will come again and King Sihtric of Dublin will arrive by ship to marry Princess Edith, the sister of Aethelstan, the West Saxon king of England in a spectacular Royal Wedding ceremony at York's great Minster.

However, not all are joyful at the coming of this fierce Viking to make a southern alliance in this Northern stronghold and the dogs of war bay at the gates. Dreadful handstrokes will be exchanged in terrible weapon play and there will be much to fight for before the day is done!

What for? You live in Viking lands yet. Make your own Viking festival instead.

Hehe, how should I manage that? I have never spoken personally to a heathen in Norway :runaway

Edit: I have spoken to a heathen, but not those whose belief lies in Norn mythologi and they don't care much for vikings...

York is a really nice place (though I say it grudgingly as a Lancastrian eyes: ), with one of the nicest (and largest) railway stations in England.
(Just in case you were wondering).

Viking Festival Set To Take Light

Preparations are gearing up for Shetland's annual Up Helly Aa Viking fire festival on Tuesday night.

The event sees up to 1,000 costumed "guizers", complete with flaming torches, set a Viking longship ablaze after a procession in Lerwick.

Shetland and Orkney were ruled by the Norse for about 500 years until they became part of Scotland in 1468.

The festival stems from the 1870s and attracts thousands of revellers to take part in the spectacle.

After the galley has been burnt, a series of dances and performances take place in local halls in Lerwick, with squads visiting each.

Wednesday is a public holiday and the islanders are out again at night for the Guizer's Hop.

    Viking Festival at Egge, Norway

The Viking Festival at Egge is a major event for anyone with interest in the Viking age. The festival has special attractions for children; a viking playground with all kinds of viking activities, competitions and plays. The scary viking Silkeskjegg appears every day in a children’s theatre performance. The adult visitors can also enjoy a variety of happenings; the Viking Market offers all sorts of arts and crafts from all over Europe, there is a performance of the monolouge "trur eg" friday and saturday afternoon, and we must not forget the very special Gilde arranged at Friday and Saturday evening. The Gilde takes place in a magic atmosphere created by different performers - singers, riverdance, you can listen to Irish music and experience more of the things the vikings discovered during their forays around Europe. Finally, there are exhibitions and historic lectures for you to attend, you can become aquainted with the viking cuisine and viking mead, watch viking battles etc.

3nd Viking Festival at Egge, Norway,
    12th - 15thof July.
